Congrats Americans that have posted in this thread, you've done a fantastic job of making Canada look better than us.

I think the number of guns per person is higher in canada than america....Yet less people proportionally are killed by guns in canada.

All i'm going to say about this topic is that i'd liek to thank Send for removing what he wrote, as it was pretty tasteless.

I'd also like to give myself props for not tearing into him, considering I have not one but TWO cousins who go to that school. Both are fine, Tiffany was actually on CityTV explaining what happened to her.

While counseling would be great in schools, an anti-bullying campaign would do absolutely nothing. Bullying is going to happen in schools no matter what, the problem is in helping people deal with bullies. In many cases where I observed bullying in high school, the people being bullied were basically asking for it. A lot of times it would start out as innocuous making fun that all guys do to each other, and the kid would lash out and be a complete dick about it. To a high-schooler, that is hilarious, and there's pretty much no way to get an entire school's worth of teenage guys to stop doing that once they realize they can get a reaction out of somebody.

In other situations, the kids being bullied weren't jerks, but were just REALLY fucking weird. This one dude at our school got voted homecoming princess, which is mean. But this guy was trying to make a lightsaber in his basement, and would talk about how he would whack off while his sister was in the room. I think it'd be a lot easier to get the minority of kids that get bullied some counseling for how to act in a manner that will make them socially accepted than it would be to counsel practically the entire male population of the school. Bullying won't continue past high school, but not being accepted by your peers won't just go away without some help.

Not that I was ever bullied in school, so I can't say I understand exactly where this kid is coming from, but I can safely say I would never kill anybody over anything remotely like that. I sort of see the situation from an opposite standpoint. If this kid was willing to murder people in any capacity, I think it's very possible that he deserved whatever malice he received from his fellow students. The kid murdered people! He was obviously an asshole. You may have fantasized about killing people, Eric, but fantasies are a long way away from actually doing something.

I agree that these school shootings are definitely a shame, but I don't blame the school system or the kids in school, as much as I hate schools. I blame the kid who murdered people, the parents, if their abuse caused the kid to be so weird in the first place, and, almost equally so, the media for the abysmal way they covered the Columbine shootings. Absolutely no information about those kids should have ever been released in the media. To depressed murdering goths, those kids were martyrs! Look! I can live forever if I just kill some people. I think it's very possible that this school shooting in Canada wouldn't have happened if the media had been responsible about covering Columbine.

Also the shooter was 25 and I don't believe he was a student of the college. In Columbine they were teenagers who went to the school and were shooting at people they knew, which is somewhat more horrorific... if that's possible.
I see what you're saying, and it makes sense to me. Is then fair to say that anything of note that happens on American soil, (in comparison to Canada) is bound to get overexposed and even perhaps over-exaggerated? With America's negative traits being overblown in such a matter by the media, do you think that this is some of the source of what creates the general antagonism Candadians feel against Americans?

On a related note, how often do you guys (Europeans or Canadians) hear about the positive Americans have done and continue to do on a day-to-day basis?
