vulnerable my ass. the craft was like 20 years old. =/ i'm not sure where the blame lies here, probably in maintenince for not realizing that the space shuttles needs to be either replaced or seriously remodelded. they can't last for too much longer, as today's tragedy displayed. and don't flame kookie, you assclowns. he's just stating what happened.

people die all the time, kookie... no one's posted any threads about the jet that crashed in korea or the helicopter that crashed in afghanistan, or a car crash, or anything. dying is part of living, and accidents do happen.

actually shear, the space shuttle is one of the most cared for techonologies around. They delay the launch of the shuttle if there is a chance something isn't right. you are totally wrong on saying that the materials were old, for example, the tiles on the bottom of the space ship are thoroughly examined after each flight and any sign of damage are replaced. (actually i think they replace them all but i cant confirm that so i play it safe). Its an extremely advanced ship and to a degree very delicate. It is a very tragic event, that basically had parts falling within 50 miles of where i am.

Hopefully they'll figure out what happenned and prevent it from happenning again. It may be important that we noticed the problem now rather than later.

so are you saying it is wrong to have selective sympathy? and in my case it isnt even that, i heard about this through SS and hardly ever watch the news anymore because it is all iraq bullshit. and besides, these people werent on missions of doom or trips to the supermarket, they were trying to further mankind's progress into the unknown.

Most of you here are probably too young to remember when the Challenger exploded. I can barely remember hearing the principle make that announcement over the P.A. system, but I do remember the strong feeling of sympathy, as I felt the same this morning. The space shuttles are symbols of modern technology. Though they may indeed be 20 years old now, they represent human progress as well as hope for the distant future. As I still do when I see the rising vapor trails of the Challenger, I will show my respect in the rememberance at the site of the declining vapor trails of the Columbia. And while this is not an act of terrorism I cannot help but also be reminded of September 11. On both that morning and this one, I awoke but did not get out of bed. I gained consciousness but did not feel the need to get out of bed. On both mornings, I chose to turn on the TV in my room to watch the news, something I rarely do in the mornings. Both times, the television screen blinked into life with an image of aerial tragedy. While today's tragedy lacks the senselessness of 9/11, I choose to mourn the crew of the Columbia with the same solemn mixture of respect and honour.

And shame on all of you who deem yourselves worthy of criticizing who, what, when, where or how other people choose to mourn. Yes, people die all the time and receive less notice. That does not mean that it is wrong to mourn here. That is in no way as bad as using their deaths (or the deaths of countless others) to make your own political statement.
