Who recommended this author?

Fantasy literature? Oh joy!
I recommend the books of George R. R. Martin, especially his series A Song of Ice and Fire of which there is a fifth book in the making as we speak. It is quite possibly the most successful and appraised fantasy novel series of today, with an unbelievably lively and dedicated style of writing, extraordinarily detailed characters and an immeasurable appeal that won't let you put the book away for even a second until you are completely through with the series. Order it today, in duplicates. Just in case, you know.

I'm just about a couple hundred pages into the fourth book, and I'm thoroughly engrossed. Every once in a while I suffer a "Who the hell is THAT character?" moment, but it passes eventually. I wish Martin wouldn't give every character three or four different names (Varys, The Spider, Master of Whispers, etc.), and I'd prefer a few less simultaneous storylines, but it's a damn good series. Him and Terry Goodkind are my current favorites.

I read Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind, not bad. I found it hard to get through, but the ending was good. Thanks for another author, I read Fantasy pretty quick.

I'll second that recommendation. That series is probably my favorite that I have ever read. This isn't any mild or light-hearted fantasy for the young at heart. If you don't like when your favorite character gets killed in a series, then don't read George R.R. Martin. If you like graphic, violent, gritty and realistic medieval fantasy, then this will be your type of thing.

i agree its an excellent series...very well written and very involved. i'd reccomend it to anybody, but i dont think its quite up to the 'favorite series' level yet. there are some tough contenders...lotr, foundation trilogy...my favorite probably is and always will be the enders game series by orson scott card.

Of course LoTR is the best, but I really don't consider it a series. When Tolkien wrote it, he wrote it as one book and didn't intend for there to be three seperate volumes. It was the publisher who seperated it into three volumes.

You can see the whole of Tolkien as a series tho, LOTR, The Hobbit, the other books he wrote around it.

Nive to see so many people back him up too - I keep posting though because I'd really like to know who recommended Erikson. I've read all the Harry Potters myself, and seen the movies - not the best, but fun nonetheless. Plus I started reading them when I was 14 or so.

Yes, Tolkien is and will be forever the king, I just re-read the Hobbit because Erikson and Jorden are still writing :P

Jordan is an excellent writer, I started reading the first book in the WoT series back in like.. 4th grade or something, and it still isn't done yet. It is on book 11 right now, and there will only be 12 books, the final book is "sorta" on the way but Robert Jordan is hella sick, and is currently staying at the Mayo Clinic so. Last book is called "A Memory of Light" not 100% when it will be released yet. www.dragonmount.com has all this info btw.

thanks for telling me about that, I knew he was getting sick - but I didn't realize how bad. I'm terrified at the thought of reading 11 of his books over the last 5+ years maybe? and then he dies on the finale.. oh damn that would be horrid.

I heard Jordan was thinking about 14 books, from a friend in Newfoundland..
Anyhow, I beat FFXII - awesome stuff check it out - what other Fantasy others do you read kthx? never can have too much to read, unless your in school.

Yeah no problem on the info, but that site is pretty good as far as details, RJ's wife posts on that site so she knows what is going on, and supposedly the next book "Memory of Light" (book 12) is supposed to be the last... But maybe what your friend is talking about is, I think some of the books got split up in Europe, the longer ones might have had like part 1 and part 2, instead of just one large book, so it makes it two more books. Just a guess.
