      Silly Nintendo though.

No DVD player and only two online capable games. How do they expect to win the console war.

Only two at this point, but more to come I'm sure.

And with the Wii's incredible price..I'm sure it will do the best, just above the 360.

And why do people think about it in terms of "winning the console war"? Who cares if they come out on top in market share, the only thing that matters for them is that they make money. People harp on the Gamecube dropping the Big N into "third" place, but the Gamecube was profitable from the get-go. Enough with the criticisms of Nintendo not winning the console war. People who say that have ignored the obvious: Nintendo isn't even trying to win that war, they're just trying to make money, and in that aspect, they've been doing pretty well.

The Wii is supposed to be profitable right from the start while, for example, Microsoft has said they don't expect to turn a profit from their games division until 2008, and that's not just for the 360 alone, but includes the original XBox figures. You have to look at the three companies in context: of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, only Nintendo is a pure video game company. The other two have resources and products that cast a wide net with gaming being only a part of a larger whole. They can afford to "win the console war" while accepting a loss, because that fits into the scheme for their entire company. For Nintendo, gaming IS their whole company so focusing on making a profit should be their primary concern.

I thought the Wii was supposed to have DVD capability.

Focusing on profit also means you wanna win the console war. Winning the console war means you sold the most, the more you sell, the bigger the profit. Their primary goal might be to make profit and they might have outlined it there way. But by saying you wanna make profit, you are also kinda saying you wanna win the console war.

More sold -> More Money -> More Wii's manufactured -> More satisfied customers + a profit for the company

No you aren't. What TK is talking about is how XBOX and PS3 are banking on the fact that their video game systems will base "awesome" based mostly upon the games they make and the graphics. Thus they're willing to lose money for a few years. Nintendo will make a lot of money no matter what. I respect their approach rather than Microsoft's or Sony's attempt to swallow the market with their graphics and blu-ray bullshit.

If that's the case, then why is Xbox, who people say finished higher than Nintendo did in the console war, losing money? Compared to Nintendo, they're winning the war, but they're far behind in profits and they admit they will continue to bleed money until 2008. Nintendo could very well have followed the same strategy the other two did and had a console that was superloaded with features and powerful hardware, but they would have suffered a loss. They could very well have won the console war last generation by following that strategy, but it would have bankrupted them because they lost too much money and couldn't rely on other sources of revenue like Microsoft and Sony can to make up the difference. Unlike those two, they can't afford to wait 6 years to make a profit like Microsoft's gaming division (Xbox launched in 2002, profit not expected until 2008) is projected to do.

People say Nintendo will shut down if they stay in third place, but they're more likely to go under if they pumped-up powerhouse.

I had a relatively stupid drunken idea to wait in line to get a Wii to sell. Every other time I've thought "eh, this console won't be worth tons on ebay" and then they are. Of course this time, Wiis AREN'T worth tons on ebay. I got in line at 5 (am) at Target and got literally the last Wii. It was an extremely tiring process, and I hated it. If anyone's willing to pay a premium for a Wii right now, btw, let me know. I bought Zelda to go with it.

edit: my buddy called around and asked all the stores how many units they were getting, thats how we picked target

I was saying, if Nintendo focuses on profit in indirectly means they are also competing in the console war. Because more selling means more profit. That doesn't mean however that when Microsoft states they wanna win the console war they indirectly go for most profit.

That is not to say they don't go for profit. Microsoft, by winning the console war, is doing all that for profit. They might have to wait 6 years. If after 6 years, your profit starts rolling in, and winning the console war, you make much more profit then Nintendo did in those 6 years, you had the better strategy. But yes, of course you have to be able to take a strategy like this which Sony and Microsoft can do, and Nintendo can't.

Nintendo just states they just wanna make profit, which indirectly means they want to win the console war, and other way around. Microsoft and Sony want to win the console war right now, to make a lot of profit in the end.
