That is not to say they don't go for profit. Microsoft, by winning the console war, is doing all that for profit. They might have to wait 6 years. If after 6 years, your profit starts rolling in, and winning the console war, you make much more profit then Nintendo did in those 6 years, you had the better strategy. But yes, of course you have to be able to take a strategy like this which Sony and Microsoft can do, and Nintendo can't.
Nintendo just states they just wanna make profit, which indirectly means they want to win the console war, and other way around. Microsoft and Sony want to win the console war right now, to make a lot of profit in the end.

-launched with 29 games on the first day, including big hitters like COD3, Red Steel and Zelda
-providing a game experience like no other system around
-games for all ages and genres, even in the launch titles
-Giving customers the ability to download old games from systems like the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, NES, and many other others
-Being able to download said retro games from Day 1 of launch
-Making sure to market their system as a video game system and not end-all be-all electronic powerhouse.
How is the last point relevant, you ask? By simply focusing on gaming and not on playing dvd's, having top of the line graphics and having an innovative, original control scheme, the Wii will be the perfect complement to the other systems. Most people will not be able to afford all 3 systems, and with the 360 and ps3 so similar in top-graphics, game libraries and control schemes, most people aren't going to buy both. What alot of people are doing though, is getting one of the two systems, and a Wii. Some people might only be able to get one system, and the low price and fun-orientated game play will push those people to get a Wii.
They turned the competition into comrades. They don't need to convince you how their system is better than the others, they just need to show you that their system is different from the rest of the pack and let the low price do the rest of the work.
And no, they aren't trying to win the console war. TK is right, they are out to make money. Making money doesn't equal to them wanting to win the war, they don't have the desire to beat out the ps3 and 360. They want to make as much money as possible, and how do they do this? Focus on gaming, on appealing to the wallets of people and their need for variety. They aren't trying to win the war, they are trying to sell video games. Period. Fuck the war, they aren't bothered by it, they have better and bigger shit to deal with.My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

By making a profit, they are by definition, winning the console war. By that criteria, you could also say that Microsoft, at this point, is losing the console war. Generally speaking however, when people talk about the console war, they are only talking about market share alone, without looking at the profit margin. And while having a higher market share means higher profits than a lower market share, in the case of Nintendo, that doesn't seem to be an important factor. Making an immediate profit is their aim, even if it means not selling as much as the competition does.
All that I am saying is that in the end all company's want the same. Making the most profit possible which basicly means having the biggest market share. That doesn't mean that Nintendo doesn't want to be making profit from the beginning and will do whatever they can to get the biggest market share. But it is ideally what they are after.Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

how do they do the sales in the US? from the news clips ive seen online (not really that credible but..), it looks like they just open the doors and let people rush in for the ps3. I like how they did it in tiny Kitchener, giving tickets to the people in line a few hours before the store opened. That way people waiting dont have to wait the entire time for nothing. And they only let people with tickets in the store to purchase their consoles and extras.
Haven't heard of anything bad happening in Canada.
While I waiting in line for the wii, someone said a wal-mart somewhere did "musical chairs" to give out their ps3's. first 10 to sit in a chair got a ps3. Was that true? cause I think that's jsut retardedduel pasta <ER>> i can lick my asshole
