Well it looks as though you're all very well-read on US News and World Report's college ranking edition - for what that's worth.
I don't see how anyone can say "MIT is the best school in America" or "Brown is the best school in America". Even if you do take US News at its word (which is a bad thing to do) they will tell you that different programs are much better at different schools. Do you think MIT has the best History Department? Fuck no. Do you think Brown has the best Architecture college? Hell no. You should always be wary of blanket statements, especially when you're talking about thousands of schools all over the country.
Galleleo: people don't see Harvard and say, "Oh this dude is brilliant." If you are high-ranked in your class at Harvard or hold a 3.75 or something then of course it's going to be more impressive than a 3.75 at community college but there are so many intangible factors it's almost pointless to argue about.
Ivy League is largely about the connections you make, which last a lifetime. You often will get job interviews, etc. on the basis of the people you know because they're all rich and white and like to keep it that way. If being rich and white(-washed) isn't your thing then Ivy League probably isn't your thing.
Nobody, save for some high school age kids (myself included when I was in high school), is under the impression that Ivy League makes you brilliant.

yeah, but in America for the ivy league school being incredibly smart isn't enough.. you also need all these extra curriculum activities etc..
Only thing I like about the American Universities is how sports are handled, that you can go to a uni for your sport. But for the rest I think the school system is quite bs.Last edited by Galleleo; 01-01-2007, 02:54 AM.

For all of you who are bashing ivy league schools:
While I agree with many of your points, the financial need issues are not unique to the ivies alone; of the 9 schools that I am applying to, only one is an ivy, but all 9 cost about ther same amount. Of the 9 schools, all have need-blind admissions, so they don't see your financial situation when applying. If you get into Harvard and they offer you $0 in aid, but you get a full ride to a state school, its entirely your decision to make. But yes, you are paying for an ivy tag.

It's also not Ivy.
Hands down, MIT is the best school, but I said Brown was the best Ivy.

Brown, in my opinion, is the best Ivy School. It's not about money for Brown, it's about intelligence. Or so I think.

Sure if you're rich, you're more likely to get into an Ivy than a middle class student, but that's because their parents put you through incredibly expensive and rigorous private (sometimes boarding) schools who are able to get every kid into the school they want to be in (and because of the education they recieve all their life, USUALLY belong in).
Princeton is another story...

People don't really care which uni you come from over here, or which high school, or primary school. Sure some are better then others. But it's not like any uni will look at your school. You are in if you have the right diploma, or for some studies, Medicine for instance, they look at your grades. Not at your extra curriculum activities. Not at the school you come from. And every uni is just as expensive as the next one. I think the only cost variation is in the study you are doing.
I bet that I can reach just as well paying jobs and high places as most people from Yale and Harvard.
