I believe he became obsessed drawing the energy from the cat.
In stage 2 the cat has an aura. In stage 3, the lines are figuratively blurred with the cat's hair, giving that fiery look. In stage 4, the obsession becomes determined, as for me, it appears as if he's painting the secondary energy radiating from the primary energy/aura of the individual cat hairs. Stage 5, is the same as four, only more extreme. So much so that the cat is lost inside the opaque illustration of the aura surrounding it... as if the aura had become a solid shell.
At first the eyes reflect his determination but towards the end, his determination is expressed more in the detail of the energy he sees emanating from the cat.

That's just my observed laymens opinion. ^-^

no dude, those cat drawings are really trippy. I actually kinda think the before drawings are more creepy. Anyone agree?
