Negative attitudes of the teenagers of today

One big reason is the internet. Kids can access so much more media now. They're getting too smart and getting too lazy. I remember when at the age of 9 I would be out playing football in park and worrying about getting spanked for being home late. Now I see kids at the age of 9 checking their myspaces, writing blogs and leveling up their paladens on WoW. Parents can't really do shit because they don't really know what their kids are doing on the computer 15 hours a day. Most parents find it convenient because they know that their kids are at home and away from drugs and shit like that. But little do they realize, is that they get way too dependent on the internet. When these kids are away from their precious computers, they become irritable, rude, annoyed, sometimes even violent. I have a cousin who's just a fucking asshole. She slouches around the house, slumps over her computer screen all day, never even talks to her family any more and leaves the house just to go to the mall. And shes only 13. Her dad unplugged her computer for one week and she was going nuts. Not all teenagers own a computer so I'm not saying that this is the sole reason for 'negativity' but I believe it's a big contributor.

Fuck you, this is one of those retarded things old people say. It's what they said 100 years ago, it's what they said 500 years ago, it's what they said 1000 years ago. You don't even remember the shit you pulled when you were of that age, and what you found polite back then, might have upset some old hag too.

All this "more violence than .." , "more rudeness than.." is pretty stupid, since there are no real records of social behavior, other than what people considered to be appropriate in general or happenings that shocked enough to keep record of it. And I wouldn't trust your own memories on this matter either.
But if you read books from any era, you will find that there's rude youth. It has to do with their age, rather than the time they live in.

No I can honestly say I didn't cuss in the presence of my parents when I was younger, much less at them. I grew up like WuTang/Squeezer, being rude in any regard resulted in an ass-whooping and I learned pretty damn fast what I could and couldn't do. Ontop of that I don't get an Ipod or free shit all the time, the only luxuries I can say I have are the computer I'm on (got it when I graduated highschool) and my mom's car that I drive. Only reason I'm at the college I am is because of the scholarship that I got, otherwise my ass would be somewhere else working multiple jobs to pay for it.

Did I have a better life growing up than my parents? Yeah, but they also made sure to instill the values that they had when they were growing up. Which is why sometimes I feel like I'm 10, 15 years older than I really am just because I'm respectful to adults/my friends parents even when their kids who aren't even 10 years younger than me are acting like spoiled brats.

Edit- Excellent post phata$$, I completely agree. Kids don't spend nearly as much time outside, which sucks because I loved running around getting dirty and shit until it got dark. That's what made Saturday mornings so fucking great.

Its a mixture of reasons, what zerzera said is complete bull, todays youth is undoubtedly less respectful than those that came before, obviously kids were not all 100% well behaved, but there were certainly less brats around.

The parents are to blame, how children act is nurture not nature, we are now in a culture where smacking your children is frowned upon, every thing is now so politically correct, you can look around when you see a child get smacked in public, even if the kids being a complete rat, most people look at the mother or father as if they have commited a great crime, whereas im all "hell yeah hit em again". If kids aint afraid of their parents then they will do what they want, the ole "wait till your father comes home" was the scariest thing for me when i was a kid cause i knew what was coming.

Although to be fair most people want to give their children better lives than they had themselves, the problem is they are spoling them. Technology is a massive contributor aswell, in the past good old fun would be family get togethers, playing some games, or youd be out with your mates playing footy, just getting tired out, when you get home your nackerd and dont have the energy to scream at your parents, nowadays kids of 8 onwards just spend all the time playing games, away from their parents, and not tireing themselves out.

The teen culture doesnt help either, have you seen what 11 year olds wear these days, kids are dressing like adults, and how many children did you know when you was growing up had a mobile phone at 11? children are acting like adults, and expect to have the freedom of adults, when they have nowhere near the maturity.

bring back the cane I say, The most blame is with parents to be honest, my little cousins are such animals because they get what they want, when they want, and are never punished, in my day if I acted like an animal, id get smacked, you wouldnt see me mouthing off to my parents. Its easier for parents now to leave their children to their own devices, sit them in front of a t.v or p.c, the problem is the kids just wont listen to their parents anymore.

I think it has to do with the devoice rate and the general discontent and instability in the home environment. Families broken up or both parents working all day to make a basic living... Kids can express the stress, anger and emotional pain in many ways so some will turn to bullying, gangs other will become very reclusive and anti-social and a small few will mature quickly and be better for it.

My parents didn't really hit me and my brothers. We were not allowed to talk back, swear or anything to them. Punishment was generally getting grounded. If my parents were more strict with us and not give in so often I think things would have turned out very differently. They also decided to break up at a very critical time in my life (14-15). I still don't believe in hitting your kids.

Kids are simple. My two year old niece understands that hitting is wrong but if it's wrong for her to do it then the rule applies to everyone. If you teach them that escalating things to physical violence is ok sometimes then they'll use their own (undeveloped) judgment to decide when it is necessary as well.

I am quite happy with my upbringing, me and brother have always had a pretty free upbringing. There where rules, but they weren't that strict and as long as we didn't break them there we no problems. We also always got a lot of responsibility, more responsibility the older we got and we got taken accountable for our responsibilities. We never really got hit, spanked on the bottom a couple of times, but usually the threats were more then enough.

I remember that when I used to go over to other kids houses they had to ask if they could get a drink.. I have always found that weird. At our place it's like, if you want a drink, you get one. If you want chips (depending on when and how old we were, the younger we were the more control on the snackfood and when we ate it) but if it's gone, it's gone and you're just gonna have to wait till the end off the week when the groceries are being done again.

Though, I can't really be compared to other kids, cause when my dad died I was 14 and it kinda forced me to grow up quickly and mature early, cause my bro was being an arsehole and my mom just had a hard time, so I had to step up.

1) Kids are too spoiled these days. When their parents give them everything they want, why would they be good? As well, because of litagation, parents fight for everything... kids think everything should go their way too.

2) Kids are too sheltered these days. When playground structures are all plastic now, and corners are all rounded... how can kids be kids? They are so sheltered they need to rebel to feel like they are living life.

3) Discipline. Parents need to discipline their children. That's why immigrants get ahead, because they discipline their children.

At least, I think that my generation (late 20s) having kids will be able to control their kid's computer usage more than the generations before me, who didn't grow up on computers.

I love the fact that by the time I turned 16 I managed to scout pretty much entire town I lived in (~200.000 ppl), I spent hours upon hours playing basketball, football, stealing fruit from private properties, a friend got a new bike, only to have breaks removed on the very first day, and we went up a slopping street (maybe 300 yards total lenght) and just swoosh down without breaks (on a bmx) (lol my friend got beat up by his dad when he got home after we owned that bike), or just sitting outside with friends.
These kids today...all they do is play computers, and get lippy and lippy. I have 2 nieces (7 and 9), spoiled as shit, their parents have no control over them, and their mum already bought them a cellphone, and is now thinking about getting them a laptop. What the fuck is a 9yr old needing a cell or laptop for!? Here is a ragdoll, get in your room and PLAY WITH IT!!

I am brought up in such way that, even now, I still wait for my mum to finish talking with her friend, before I ask her something. I don't cut in, and I'm a grown man.
Upbringing is so important, the respect for elderly, respect for yourself, learning to behave, to be happy with what you get, and what you have. No wonder our world is fucked up, when the 12 year olds think their world is the same as that of the internet.
And please don't give me that bullshit about reasoning and having conversation with kids, they may be smart, but they are still goddamn kids, newbies at life, and parents should set proper examples, teach them rights and wrongs, educate them.
Everybody today is like, ooh we have to make this world better for our kids, oooh think of the kids, ooh poor kids. NO! Fuck kids. We need to make this world better for ourselves, we need to stop being fucking idiots, and our kids will have a good place to grow up at.
