When I was at Uni I used to study for exams, about 3 weeks before, from around 9am to 5pm...3hrs of study during that time frame, and Im done for the day. And usually 2 days before the exams I wouldnt study at all, I'd go to movies and shit.

Reports...was always late on them...so boring to write lab-reports...so ez (when you have to), but I dont think I've ever written one without first being late 2-3 weeks

      Here's my advice dude:
      • Every morning open up Word and write a list of what you have to do - Make sure the important tasks are at the top and the least important down the bottom. Print off this list and try and get the stuff you hate out of the way first.
      • Offer suitable rewards for yourself once each task is completed. Don't be unrealistic about your rewards.
      • Cross off each task as you complete them.
      • Stick to the list.
      • Don't let yourself be distracted.
      • Remember it's not all hard work - the rewards from completing your tasks will be worth it.
      • AT the end of the day you'll feel much better as you've accomplished what you wanted to complete.

It's a mental thing too. Sum up the benefits of studying and the costs of not studying. Would you have rather passed that test or played that duel? What is more important in your life? Think long term as well.

Hope that helps - Kiwi <ZH>

Seriously, all you civilian college students out there, how do you deal with procrastination? I know I have homework due tomorrow but it's really tough to make myself do it now, when I have the time. I know if I don't I'll be cramming tonight and staying up until 2 in the morning finishing it. Yet it's still difficult to make myself just START.

Anyone have good tips for staying on track?
fixed. i can offer you a good list of tools but really its as simple as just finding something you want to work towards and doing it. If you have no goal or nothing you want to achieve by doing this work then you will never motivate yourself enough to do it and its as simple as that. It's really hard to tell what kind of stuff you want to study without having any real world experience working in the field, though, so I'll give you that.

7 P's Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Only advise I can give is this:
In 5 years will Trenchwars exist? The game might but, I don't think it will. Think long term when your 30 do you want to live in a nice house, have a nice ride, enjoy good food and support a women. Don't take your education for granted. When I got out of Highschool, I had to work real hard to "pay" for college classes. If I applied myself with studies, I might have gotten a full ride to some Division 2 or 3 school. Due to the fact I was a slacker, I still have student loans I'm paying off. Study up!!

long story short i never beat it - don't let it happen to you!

                long story long

i just chanced my arm more and more until i finally thought fuck it

                in hindsight stupid

i never did much homework as far as i was concerned that was my time, i learn in school. luckily i did ok and could grasp things inclass, but i took a lot of days off school (skiving)and never caught up on notes so gaps in my knowledge began to appear

this kept happening till i got to uni where i was drinking loads and not going to class much.

Then i went ahh i don't know whats going on i fucked up! - lets try again on a dif course

that went even worse, for the first month i never actually went in to any lectures - for one module i attended only 2 lectures and 2 tests. the results for that module where out off 60% final exam 40% from 4 class tests. I passed this module getting 60% final score ....... but then failed a different module only becuase i didn't achieve the 50% practical attendance requirement they introduced while i had skipped class

then i thought pff screw this an R ( i had passed 2 out off the 3 modules the guide gave F for fail but i got an R? ==ment if i had showed convincing evidence i had done the practicles i would pass -found out after ) wtf is that - i going get me a job

yea employers don't really like a 2x uni drop out i found.

hope that motivated ye :P don't be like me! don't procrastinate!

I have my dissertation due in 2nd of May, I have had this piece of work since July 06.

                    It's meant to be 10,000 - 12,000 words.

I have done 2000 words, which were done for my "Interim report" (read: progress report) just before Christmas.

I haven't done any research yet

                    It is a research report

There isn't much information on my subject of research "Applications of clusters of picosatellites flying in close formation".

This is my most important piece of work so far in my entire life.

The "progress report" I mention in that thread is the same one I mentioned above.

Making a planning or whatever doesn't work for me. I could make a planning and then when I had to do it, I would go like: Well, I could easily catch up on that tomorrow and still do that other stuff tomorrow too, so I'll just watch this movie now.

I just need pressure to perform. My curse is that I learn really easy, so in high school I could pass everything with a (in American terms) a B or higher by just starting the night before, reading it once and that's that. So I never really had the experience of failing for something because I didn't spend enough time on it. Which is killing in Uni, cause I can still learn as good, but the amount of stuff you have to do is like 15x as much so one night just isn't enough time. So I really have to learn to start in time, but that isn't really working so far. Luckily though, I have still passed everything this year.

But, I never have a problem with doing something eventually, I never go to an exam and then having done nothing, cause when the pressure is on, that is when I perform best. The fact that I don't really stress easy helps too.

I spent 14 hours learning all the material for a differential equations test, went back to my room to sleep for 3 hours and took the test. Ended up getting a 110 on it

Yes, I had 90s in undergrad university from studying for exams the night before in 1/2 my classes.

That said, these days I study for about 4-8 hours a day for 12 weeks straight and I still don't know half as much as I need to.

It think the only way to really correct procrastination is either to have so much work it's physically impossible not to do work (as I am now), or to just realize you're working for something and have a goal in mind where if you can't achieve, you can't make your goal. In which case you convince yourself to work harder.
