Meh, I played the original SO around two years ago after downloading the rom and the dejap pack, still had the original japanese audio with text translated in english. Aside from the game having alot of stuff to do, it was relatively crappy, the storyline was blah. I mean during this era I was playing legendary RPG's. Final Fantasy 3 (6), Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Zelda (SNES), and other masterpieces such as these. Nowadays I have sorta switched up the Final Fantasy style RPG series which have really gone downhill ever since, well 7. I don't understand why they had to tone down everything so much, where are the crude and raw characters that were selfish and didn't really give a shit if the world was going to collapse until it affected them. Nowadays Squaresoft wants to have half-dressed Xog-like characters whining about having to solve puzzles and crying because they broke a nail or something with their midriff showing the entire time. I mean I understand the the new age of RPG's is going to be like this, where the classic end of the world kill the bad guy thing doesn't work anymore, and there has to be strange japanese doings and jokes everywhere, but for god sakes, put the blood and violence and cursing back into the genre before squaresoft starts releasing Teletubbies RPG where you gain levels by staring at the freaking devil baby in the sun. But basically all I am trying to say here is that yeah.. the SO game is alright, and SO:2 even less alright. Gotta play random ass japanese RPG's if you want a good game these days.

Fun fact though: in the month of April, the Gameboy Advance outsold the PS3 in North America.
Anyways. Yeah, the Final Fantasy games have gone down immensely since 9 on the PS1. The remixed Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 1+2 Anniversary Editions are alright ... if you haven't played them to death already. I dunno, I remember Star Ocean 2: the Second Story as being my #1 favourite RPG that wasn't Final Fantasy 7 back in the day. The deepest item creation system in a game, Iron Chef mini game, fun storyline, nothing groundbreaking, but it was fun. I loved the shit out of this like my first born pretty much.DELETED

I would have to say the least talked about RPG ever, yet one of my favorites would have to be - Lufia 2 - It was a puzzle-solving RPG game with that 100 level dungeon, now that was a hella fun game when it first game out. Doubt many of you RPG newbs have played and beat that.Rabble Rabble Rabble

Bragging about how awesome you are cause you just happened to play some random shitty RPG? That's just sad.
To the main point(s):
All of you should play Xenosaga I, II and III. The most underrated/unknown masterpiece RPG on the PS2 ever.

[QUOTE=RATTY...;574629]Secret of Evermore was never, and will never be considered a "masterpiece". The game is as crappy as you are in the wb with your horrible lag. Not even mentioning Chrono Trigger only shows what an RPG newbie you are, if there's such a word.
First off, Chrono Trigger was a terrible game. It was the same ole crap, and I love how you consider the first RPG to have an active combat system to not be a masterpiece, talking about paving the way for future generations of RPG's to come, such as your beloved Xenotrash. Atleast you don't have the balls to talk about Secret of Mana, even I can agree that SoE wasn't up to par with that, but in its own right it was still a masterpiece for the bar it raised on creating ingenuitive fighting systems.Rabble Rabble Rabble

Enough with the copy and paste, and back to some writing.

Atleast you don't have the balls to talk about Secret of Mana, even I can agree that SoE wasn't up to par with that, but in its own right it was still a masterpiece for the bar it raised on creating ingenuitive fighting systems.
SoE was not the first game who had active combat system, as it's hard to define what active real combat is, it's hard to say who was the first. Pushing a button to attack? The fighting mechanics are connected to your stats when you fight in real time?
But still, SoE is just a bad ripoff of SoM made by Square USA, and realeased 1995. While SoM was realeased 1993 in Japan, released in 1994 in Europe, still before the crappy SoE came out.
Talking about rip-offs:
In SoM you controll multiple characters. Guy with sword and a little girl, little kid and his dog (SoE), being able to switch between them. The menu during combat is ring based, the items going around in a circle. Saving power up to 100% to hit hard, while hitting all the time isn't effective and doesn't damage.
And wow! Talk about being a coincidence! SoE has the exact same things! BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT WAS RELEASED AFTER SoM! I could prolly list up some minor similarities, but I can't be bothered. So the "the first RPG to have an active combat system to not be a masterpiece, talking about paving the way for future generations of RPG's to come." part looks kind of stupid now, doesn't it?
And talking trash about Chrono Trigger, the game was fucking revolutionary? It was the first game in the history to be turn based and not have random enemy encounters. It would take several years before a game had those kind of things. Funny characters with a history. Being able to combine their skills, the most genious thing ever made in an RPG. Multiple endings, around 20 or so, can't be bothered to look it up. Dozens of sidequest, and amazing graphics. The only game with better graphics on the SNES is the amazing Tales of Phantasia, but that game came out late, and it even had real voice in battle and a girl singing.
Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece no matter if you like it or not.

Chrono Trigger was good, but is highly overrated due to nostalgia factor by many.
Lufia 2 (while fun) isn't a turn based strat rpg, it's an action RPG that paved the way for games like the Wild Arms series and Alundra.
Xenosaga is horrible and a disgrace to Xenogears, which was a fantastic game.
Some really good RPGs on the ps/ps2:
Vagrant Story
Tactics Ogre (port I know)
Xenogears
Digital Devil Saga 2 (1 is the setup, not as good because you don't know as much)
FFT
The rest is pretty mainstream and I think most people in here have played them. Haven't tried the persona series yet, heard it's hardcore as fuck so it could be up there as well.
EDIT- TK about 6 months ago or so my buddy found a copy of the original Dynasty Warriors game for psx in some shitty EB in Kentucky. I have it and it's "lol" in videogame form. Any idea about a DW6?My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

And Ratty, nice edit. Still doesn't do shit for your credibility though.
I really do think 4 was the height of the series. My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen.
