Have to say that the "healthcare" system in the USA is so fucked up it's unbelievable. The insurance companies either refuse to give you an insurance or if you got one and get sick they will fuck you over with some technicality.

I didn't claim to know anything beyond watching the film by Moore. Since you insinuate I somehow "got it wrong" feel free to educate me which parts of Sicko are false/wrong.

Some examples from "the greatest country ever!"

-Guy doesn't have an insurance and two fingertips get sawed off in an accident. He get's to choose which one he can afford to attach back (12000$ or the other one for 60000$, in civilized countries he would still have both fingertips. Sicko is about ppl WITH insurance thou, this guy was just an example in start)

-Couple got insurance, but the guy gets 3 heart-attacks and the wife gets cancer. Despite the insurance they have to sell their house and move in with one of their daughters.

-Girl had a car accident and lost consciousness. She gets taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Insurance company refuses to pay the ambulance ride because the ride was not preapproved.

-Insurance company rejects insurance application because the guy is too thin (6feet tall, 130 pounds) and because a girl's bodymass index is too high (5 feet 1 inch tall, 175 pounds).

-Woman got brain tumor and was scheduled for surgery. Insurance company denied treatment because they didn't consider it "life-threatening". She died.

-Guy got cancer. Insurance company refused bonemarrow treatment because it was considered "experimental". He died.

-Some 9/11 rescueworkers get treatment in Cuba for free (cuban's have free universal healthcare which is considered very high quality). One of them needs an inhalator (or something) that costs 120 dollars in the states which costs 5 cents in Cuba. Also there will probably be some sort of legal action against them because it's illegal for USA citizens to goto Cuba because of the embargo.

That's just a part...there is other stuff too in the movie. Like comparing the system to what Canada, UK or France got.

Anyways.. should be an eye-opener if you live in the states. Or if you are anti-american it should be a laugh (I didn't laugh except for the absurdity of some stuff, I have compassion you know).

Er I know doctors who worked in Texas who had to refuse patients without insurance all the time because it was hospital policy.

its the same thing in Europe if you get a pivate medical insurance. they are cheaper than state insurances, but they try to fuck you because they are capitalists, its their job.

for example i know someone sho said he wont get ill and got the cheapest insurance. than he collaped, was taken to hospital, was not put on stationary care and had to pay 600€ from his own pocket because insurance only covers statinary hospital costs. he should have gone to a doctor instead, too bad he was unconsciousness and the ambulance got him. but it is in his contract, black and white.

morale of the story, take the state healthcare and pension insurance, because all the others just want to fuck you for money.

yes for example in houston the county hospitals are Ben Taub (Texas Medical Center) thats the #1 hosptial in the southern us then LBJ (Lyndon B Johnson) thats the ghetto one but they will never refuse treatment but u will wait a long time i broke both my hands and waited 21 hours before being seen but i was seen LOL BUT PLACES LIKE MEMORIAL HERMANN AND northwest medical center they will refuse you without insurance or cash anything but a county hospital can refuse treatment

The insurance companies more or less dictate to the hospitals on patients care as well as what is and whats not covered. Is this any suprise? They can overide a Doctors opinion on if a patient needs to stay in the ICU or just the hospital for extended amounts of time. Pregnancy is now considered almost out-patient care, as an insurance company will not want to pay for lengthy stays.

Just look at how great a job Insurance companies have handled the Hurricane Katrina claims.

Lawyers are the other side of the coin, due tro malpractice claims, Dr.'s are moving from certain cities withhigh claims to denying care to certain patients in fear of legal problems on bogus claims.

Doctors are in the middle and really have the least say.

It's an interesting movie that points out the failures of just one of many an industry here.
