try being mentally ill in america. people complain about healthcare a shit ton in this country, and i bet at least half of those people aren't even considering mental health in their rantings. insurance companies don't just screw you if you're in need of long-term mental healthcare, they basically condemn you.

        Health Care

How much does society 'owe' people when they do not Care about thier own Health?

If I smoke two packs a day, eat burgers every day, take in too much salt, drink until my liver gives up, then the rest of society (or the other people in my insurance pool) should foot the bill?

That's how it works over here, everyone has insurance and as far as I know hospitals are not refusing treatment because of insurance issues.

Though I guess there are also treatments which fall outside of the basic insurance package and if you don't have extra you don't get it, I don't know exactly how it works.

              God this thread sucks.

I can't believe there are people actually defending the US Healthcare system. I can only guess they are doing so because they are young, healthy people who are completely ignorant of how the US political system and insurance system works. And maybe a little prideful about non-residents criticizing their country, regardless how relevant it might be.

Like Mega, I have seen how fucked up this system is with my own eyes. I won't even talk about how my mom had to file for bankruptcy a few years ago because she couldn't afford to pay for medical bills that she had to put on her credit cards. She has a fucking masters degree and is a principal for a school. And she had to file for bankruptcy. But instead, I'd rather discuss my friend, John Weaver.

I had a friend who worked for a large telecom provider. He had medical insurance through his work, ATT Wireless. One day his stomach started hurting, so he had to take time off of work. Unfortunately, his stomach just kept getting worse, so he goes to the doctor. They don't know what's wrong with him, they think it's just stress so he's cleared to return to work. He still stays home because he feels like shit, and gets fired because he runs out of sick leave, leaving him without medical insurance. He keeps getting worse...weeks pass...so he eventually goes to the county hospital where they tell him they can't really do any extensive testing until he's cleared for state insurance. That takes more than six months---by which time they find he has terminal, inoperable cancer. He died within a few months. Those last few months, he was doped on codeine and morphine. But prior to that, he went through agony for more than half a year. He was trapped in his apartment, relying on friends for groceries and his parents for rent. What if he didn't have any friends or relatives? How many others are in this same position?

Seeing him die like that made me realize that nobody should have to go through what he went through. Nobody. My friend John wasn't a fuckup, or a failure in life...he was a hard worker who had a kind heart and was totally fun to be around. He just got dealt a bad hand, but was shortstacked so he had to push all-in with nothin. But even if he was a dirtbag alcoholic loser, nobody should have to die like that in a first-world country. Healthcare shouldn't be about liberals or conservatives---and whoever politicizes the subject are fucking idiots, in my opinion. It's about basic human decency. This country should have universal healthcare.

Who pays for all this health care?

At my company, for the last 3 years, our group insurance agent comes in each year announcing, “good news, your rate is only going up 25% this year”. We cover 95% of each employee’s insurance and 75% of their families insurance. When we absorb these 25% annual increases we do not have a lot of money left over for annual raises. Yet we continue to have people who run to the emergency room for headaches and sore throats while other people do use the insurance responsibly.

So it may be easy to be critical of health care systems, but I see no posts here about who is going to pay for it all.

I think that's pretty obvious. Who pays for it would be the same people that pay for any community service---the community.

Do I really WANT to pay taxes? No, but when my friend's house catches fire, I think it would be cool if the fire department shows up to save his family from turning into charcoal briquettes.

And you are willing to pay even if it is the third time the fire department has shown up and yet he keeps somehow setting fire to his house?

The point is that the problem with 'socialized anything' is that all people are not the same. Some people in an insurance pool practice good health care, some do not. Some people who are in your home owners insurance pool live in areas that are low risk, while other people have vacation houses on the coast. They fucking choose to have the high risk, why should my insurance costs go up because of that? Some people CHOOSE risky life styles, but we all end up paying for it? If someone wants to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, go for it. But pay for your own risk.

So in your perfect world if some crazy fuck decides to burn down his house and put his and other lives at risk, you'd be willing to let those people die or be injured because he simply has no money or refuses to pay to put the fires out? The ridiculousness of having a privatized fire fighter service aside do you really think it would do a better job in terms of service and lower costs?

Hypothetically he would be arrested the first, second and third time and be removed at some point from putting others in danger. I would be willing to pay for it because this person is putting himself and others in danger and he clearly has some mental or emotional issue.

a live is worth the same, no matter what. the strong help the weak, thats the whole point. someone who is better than you doesnt need you, thats for sure so basically you would only care for yourself.

if you had no lazy drug addict art students in occasional need of a brain doctor you would not have half of this words art. People are coulourfull, thats a good thing not a bad. you pay for their weak sides, they pay for yours. some pay more into the pool than you, some pay less. dangerous living bikers for example save the environment, guess how they think about your car? maybe you cost way more money and cause way more harm than they do? could be, i dont know.

I would still pay for your healthcare. Because even self centered, n.i.m.b.y. assholes like you deserve not to die a slow, painful death if your insurance fucked you with a loophole.

Oh, and no need to thank me. It's called basic human decency.
