wow it's a shame such an ass bag like michael moore had to take up this cause. he does nothing but turn intelligent people away from the real issues. i'd love to see all the people who refused to do interviews with him even thought they lost someone to cancer or whatever. healthcare sucks and is in need of reform or at least a regulatory committee to keep them in check. fuck michael moore for making me care less about health care just because he's an asshole.

At my company, for the last 3 years, our group insurance agent comes in each year announcing, “good news, your rate is only going up 25% this year”. We cover 95% of each employee’s insurance and 75% of their families insurance. When we absorb these 25% annual increases we do not have a lot of money left over for annual raises. Yet we continue to have people who run to the emergency room for headaches and sore throats while other people do use the insurance responsibly.
I guess you don't realize, so I will say it again. Everyone else in the world spends MUCH LESS on healthcare per capita than Americans do. Canadians spend about 1/2 as much.
Your little rant demonstrates pretty easily why taxes are better. Your rates went up 25% each year... taxes will NEVER go up that fast, and they don't. Yet it's not like healthcare in every other country is getting 25% worse each year.
I will take another quote from you (out of context, but very applicable):
Second, any source that is for profit should be taken as just that, someone trying to make a buck.
So not only is the entire private health care system against the idea of human dignity (not everyone who is uninsured DESERVES to be uninsured, and in fact there are tens of millions of children who are uninsured and I hope you won't say they deserve to die if they ever get sick), but it also costs a lot more, for basically the exact same level of care. Or if you use general indicators of health such as life expectancy, neonatal mortality, and so on... the US actually does a lot worse than most industrialized countries.Epinephrine's History of Trench Wars:

If I smoke two packs a day, eat burgers every day, take in too much salt, drink until my liver gives up, then the rest of society (or the other people in my insurance pool) should foot the bill?

Exactly, and insurance companies in the USA are out to make a profit. This extra layer of middlemen out there to MAKE MONEY is why you pay 2x as much as we do in Canada for basically the exact same healthcare.

Oh, and no need to thank me. It's called basic human decency.

Hypothetically he would be arrested the first, second and third time and be removed at some point from putting others in danger. I would be willing to pay for it because this person is putting himself and others in danger and he clearly has some mental or emotional issue.
What I was trying to say was about insurance, and insurance pools where a small percentage of abuses can drive the costs upward, and the situation where people rely on insurance instead of family, friends, smaller social circles.
The insurance industry started with betting, in English pubs with betting on which ships would return. That is how Lloyds began.
In the 'old' days people relied much more on developing close kit families, friends, and community. This was their 'insurance'. If their barn burned down, the family was helped with everyone coming to a 'barn-rasing'.

Basic human decency includes making sacrifices for the good of the collective, regardless of how you may personally feel about some of the individuals within the collective.
Nobody deserves to die a slow painful death in a first world country, for lack of healthcare. Not someone who smokes. Not someone who is a drunk. Not even a selfish asshole who only cares about himself.
