um, contrary to poplular belief, Iraq and Afganistan are still autonomus countries, just because we have a hundred thousand troops over there doesn't make it the 51st state (still working on PR). I have yet to see any reports about us claiming Iraqi oil wells as our own and taking their oil. I don't even think they drill for oil in Afganistan (although they'd make more $ selling drugs).

I'm not upset about the fact that the technicality exists, I'm just don't think that Russia's claim fits the bill. It would help if the article mentioned an example of where this technicality was in use since I don't see how an underwater ridge 400 mi (if the map's scale is correct) off the coast fits into the "extention of continental territory". What's next, Iceland claiming the mid-atlantic ridge?
