  • Apple iPhones

apparently some kid hacked the sim card and unlocked it so you don't have to go with ATT as a carrier

it was up on a blog but I don't have the link, I had come across it through a yahoo news reel & scoped it out, it would seem as tho a company purchased the hacked phone for 1, nissan 350z / and 3 8 gig iphones

not a bad sale for a guy who probably did this in a month or so

does anyone have the iphone yet?

my recommendation... you would be a 1st gen beta tester for this phone, there isn't enough applications established for it yet... there isn't GPS, its GoogleMAPS, theres no msn messaging ( altho I hear meebo.com ) is working on it for it, email can be done either through the Edge network or WIFI, while using the Edge network your going through an ATT server and confusing enough to most people, while on the edge network, to send outgoing, you cannot use your ISP outgoing mail server... last but not least, you cannot use exchange servers, so the many business people on exchange / intranet servers won't be able to get their business mail

all in all, its a cool looking device... aside from the ipod type player format where you cannot just stick any songs you want on the thing from any computer..... and if your using a windows computer, your calling apple tech support for help... tell me how thats supposed to work

the iPhone reminds me of my mother's Ford Explorer Sporttrac, which tries to be both an SUV and a truck and winds up just being the shitty aspects of both.

The iPhone needs to run on a GSM network so the only way this hack is at all feasible is only if you have another carrier who also uses GSM. In Canada the only company that uses GSM is Rogers, which is why everyone in Canada knew Rogers would be the company exclusively carrying the iPhone even though nobody made announcements for a long time. (there is no ATT in Canada anymore far as I know, if they do exist they don't use GSM). Some phones are compatible accross network types but the iPhone. I have no idea how prevalent GSM is in America (it probably is very common but I doubt it is universal) so even a "hacked" iPhone wouldn't work with your carrier for sure, you'd have to do more research.

Also the iPhone just uses Safari (web brower) for it's apps so while I obviously have no first hand experience with it I assume there are millions of apps in existence already. There are probably dozens of people who frequent this forum who could make a good app for it in a few hours. That's just my guess though.

I think they look amazing so far as a phone is concerned. In my opinion there is no reason not to get one other than the fact that it is retardedly expensive. But if someone said I get a free phone, I'd totally pick it.

Give it two years until AT&T no longer have exclusive rights. I know it's a long time to wait, but by then the 2nd/3rd gen of this phone will be available for next to nothing (like the RAZR), and apple will have to let go of their control of the services/rates for their phone.

Currently, there are no corporate rates for the iphone, and apple sets all the services and does all the repair work. Which leaves business users out.

I really want one though. I just don't want to pay so much for it.

Has Rogers announced an agreement with Apple regarding the iPhone? Canadian carriers are notorious for charging very high data rates and Rogers did not want to agree to Apple's terms last I heard. And no AT&T does not exist in Canada anymore.

GSM is a huge part of the American market. 2 of the big four carriers are GSM, T-Mobile and AT&T, while the other 2, Sprint and Verizon, are CDMA. Hacked phones could be used on T-Mobile while the rest of the market would not be affected.

I will be shocked if the 2nd and 3rd generation iPhones are less than $300, even $400. This of course is assuming they make some marked improvements over the first generation. Companies like Apple and RIM (the one I work for) make their money off the hardware and not the data plans. They can't afford to sell devices for $100-200 unless they have been in the market for a long time or carriers themselves are willing to pay for the rebate.
