  • Help Liquid Blue build himself a computer!

Hey, I need a new computer. I built the one I'm currently on, but it's about 4 years old and starting to show its age, and there are a good amount of kickass games I want to play. So a new computer is the obvious choice. Problem is that I haven't been into messing with computers for about 4 years now, so I have no idea what is mid-grade, top of the line shit right now. Here's what I need-

    -Motherboard
    -Processor
    -Ram
    -Power supply
    -Graphics card

I'm going to get the case, fans, hard drive and dvd burner around here, but I'd love some opinions on what exactly I should get for the above. I think the GForce 8800 is top shit right now? I don't really need a card that high up, I'd be fine with an 8500 or so, I mainly want to play-

    Left 4 Dead
    TF2
    Half-Life 2 Episode 2
    Unreal Tournament 2007

Can you hook me up with some specs that will cost me 800 bucks or less? I know the graphics card will probably be the most expensive, but I'd love to build a system for around 800-900 bucks. Thanks ahead of time.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

    Computer shopper for win.

Only disagreement i might have is go with a amdmother board an chipset.
Amd athlon 64 x2 chips there cheaper and AMD is promising there phenom chip will plug into that motherboard. an word has it there going to blow the quadcore intel outa the water, tho i havent seen any stats on it yet.

          Whoa, freaky.

I ordered the same pieces as you're going to buy now 2 days ago.

I've decided to not overclock my computer at all, I'm aiming on keeping this one alive as long as possible.

This is what I went with:
          INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6850 3.00G 4MB 32BIT
I know I'm paying more that needed, but as I said, I'm staying away from overclocking this computer. It's a good, reliable CPU.

          ASUS VGA-Card nVidia 8800GTS 640MB PCI-E 2xDVI TV-Out HDTV (EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M)
The 8800GTS series is recommended everywhere, and by everyone. I added some extra $ to get a more top-end version of it.

          ASUS MB P5K3 Deluxe/ WIFI-AP LGA775 Intel P35 (P5K3 DELUXE/WIFI-AP)
Very good mobo with lots of nice features and possibilities. It has support for SLI (so I can easily upgrade my graphic by adding another card of the same type later), DD3 (still too expensive), and quad core CPUs. I hope this mobo will have what I need for a long time. Also has wireless, so I can connect to the random wireless networks around here if my net goes down.

          Geil 2GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz Ultra
Cheap RAM, with lots of recommendations by both users and test sites. Sold out everywhere.

          Corsair Power Supply 620W.
Also has very good recommendations, and gives me all the power I need without ever being a risk of damaging my computer, even with hardware that takes a lot of power.

I'm trying Intel for a change, always been an AMD man, but Intel seems to kick ass these days. Also, Asus is <3.
I ended up with around 1500$, but this is Norwegian prices, you'll prolly get it at half price or something. Good luck man.
Da1andonly> man this youghurt only made me angry

              Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
              ABIT IP35-E
              2GB DDR2 800MHz
              GeForce 8800GTS 640 (320 is good too)
              Some good quality PSU

Not much difference with GFX cards so I think should go with the cheapest. Same goes to memory.

              Should cost around $800-900

Sorry according to RATTY I'm a poor kid in the ghetto and I think spending $8,000 dollars on a computer that would run about as fast as a $1900 system I could whip up is silly.

A series 7 should play those games acceptably well if you want to cut the price down and wait for better series 8 cards to be sold at a reasonable price.

Edit: Nm, seems the 8 series are dropping to reasonable prices on newegg

He doesn't want a reasonable price. He wants to pay exorbitant amounts to show how little he cares about money. Being a firefighter soldier must be very profitable in Norway.
