He had a automatic weapon and It has been reported that 9 people are dead, and few are injured. The twenty year old guy (that was a second year student at the school) also shot himself with the weapon in the head but didn't die (yet), He has been brought to hospital, and his life is unsecure.

I hope he lives, Should ask him what made him do it.
And yes he had several videos on youtube that he is posing with his weapon, pointing at the camera and saying " You're gonna die next " and then shoots at the camera.

Something made me wonder though, they said that Finland on average had one of the highest gun possession rates in the world (after the US and Yemen). Any Finnish people know why this is? Something cultural maybe? It's something that's way out of my stereotype image of a typical Nordic country.

Hell, I'm 23, I play "violent" videogames, I watch "violent" movies, I live in the same "violent" country he does, I have easy access to firearms, yet I'm not some gun toting psychopath, why?

What I do find somewhat disturbing is that Police searched his residence on friday, and had him in for questioning on monday, yet decided not to revoke his provisional shooting license, or confiscate his .22, maybe now our gvnmt and the police will take online "video threats" more seriously...

As for Dreamwins point about metal detectors in every school etc, It seems like a matter of time now, this makes 20 dead in under a year, and people are genuinely scared of sending their teenagers to school.
School is compulsory, it should at the very least be a safe place to spend your time.

EDIT: i found this statistic online from 2007, finland has about 1.5million registered firearms, and these are spread out over a base of about 600,000 individuals. Finland has a population of about 5.3million.

Why?
Finns are "hunters", a significant portion of our population live in sparsely populated areas where hunting is still a very normal way of getting food, and it is also a popular pasttime.
My father for example is an avid hunter, and owns a few rifles+shotguns+sidearms. (all registered and licensed for hunting)

Recreational firearms (i.e. for going to shooting clubs) are also not hard to get, and iirc you only have to be 15 to be elegible for these "small calibre" firearms. (.22's)

That said, we have a very high murder rate (among the highest in europe?) and one of the highest suicide rates, but gun related crimes are generally uncommon, we like to get drunk and stab eachother with knives, not gun eachother down in the street.

I have nothing more than respect for preserving hunting practices that are imbedded in a nation's culture. What worries me though is that in today's modern western societies (in which every society is being mutually influenced by each other), certain elements can collide with traditional ones that can cause something terrible like this to happen. Unfortunately, high gun ownership is then more than likely to have a causal relationship with the situation I just described.

I will abstain from providing a "solution", because I know that this is a very complicated situation and provides for quite a major dilemma. I suppose this holds true for the Finnish government as well, now more than ever after what happened in late last year.

I didn't exactly mean to say that. What I was trying to say is that high gun ownership rates don't necessarily lead to a relative or absolute increase in gun related crimes, but they do fulfil a necessary precondition for it to happen at all. So, the greater the abundance of guns combined with pretty relaxed laws as Displaced described, I think will provide for higher odds for things like these to be able to happen.
