  • What about books??

So I am bored, I just finished Odyssey and normally I'm reading two or three books at a time because there is so many books I want to read.

Now I haven't found a book yet! I really need a book. If I don't have a book to read I won't go to bed in time and I really need something decent to read.
The newspaper is garbage, magazines are garbage, I need literature. (But not Dutch literature, I hate Dutch literature)

So, are you a reader? What do you read and why? What is your favourite book and why? Who is your favorite author and why? Just give me something to read alright... :P

EDIT: It would be really nice to read something of countries I am not familiar with. I am mostly reading English, American or Latin-American literature.
    (And French/Algerian of course )

Don't bother bringing up Ira Levin, I read 5 of his books already.

I once made a homepage with a part of the good passages of all the books i read but I always forget to update it because I write most of them on actual papers :/ fyi http://myrrhwolf.piranho.de/ ldsmile:

There are many German/Swiss/Austrian authors that I love but I'm not sure about the translations

Of the non-German-speaking authors I probably like the Russians most, for example:
Chekhov (e.g. THE SEAGULL, a melancholic play, 1896)
and Lermontov(A HERO OF OUR TIME, a novel, 1839)

Please read anything by John Irving. He is my favorite author. I recommend 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' or 'A Widow for One Year'.

chances are you've already read it but in case you haven't I'd recommend Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, it's basically a brief history of philosophy disguised as a story and I think it's pretty awesome.

Also GHB once recommended me this wonderful book from a man called Dan Brown, it was called The Da Vinci Code iirc and I thought it was a great piece of literature!

My sister's favourite author, at least I think, she is totally crazy about the world according to Garp

A friend of mine is a big fan of 'de wereld van Sophie' (Dutch version of Sophie's world), it's his favourite book. I prefer to read in English though.

I think I love Russian literature, I only read the most well-known works though I might try out Chekhov, I think someone else recommended him, or you did before. (Nice site ah.. Kierkegaard, ruined my life hehe)

I don't mind reading in German, good practice, I just don't speak the language.

I will read the other (the) Homeros, but I will need some time to find a welll translated version. I don't know if the translator also did the other, then I might read that. If not I will wait for a bit.
I want to be sure it's not a totally butchered version.

The genre of books like Dan Brown aren't really my thing, but I did read The shadow of the Wind by Zafon and did like it.

PS: I don't know if this is offending, but does anyone have a female writer as favourite? It seems hard to find real masterpieces by female writers. I did enjoy the books of the Brontes and Austin, but those are romantic books. It's discriminating, but remarkable.

Since you were reading an Ancient work, I have to say, Sappho wrote one of my favourite poems!

                    for female authors:

octavia butler (black female science fiction writer, but good)

ayn rand (objectivism is weird, but go for 'the fountainhead', 'atlas shrugged', or 'anthem' if you like... never read her other one)

ursula k le guinn (sci fi among other stuff, good stuff)

'the bell jar' by sylvia plath and 'the namesake' by Jhumpa Lahiri are two that my girlfriend really likes. i think shes read a couple by toni morrison and liked those as well

i will think on some more of in general authors that i like

Virginia Woolf is one of the most brilliant authors I have ever read.

Ulysses by James Joyce is considered one of the greatest works of irish literature and a fantastic opportunity to "feel" some of the atmosphere.
I'm reading it right now, and although I am usually a fiction reader, and the alternative writing style makes for some heavy reading, its certainly interesting (also, it's quite a thick book if you are into that).

I may have posted this before but here goes

my favorite author (by far) is Orson Scott Card. if you're going to pick anything to read, i'd pick Ender's Game. but i'm a huge fan of just about anything he does.

Irving is great also, life according to garp and a prayer for owen meaney were my favorites.

its been so long since i've had a chance to read because of classes that i dont have anything new to throw in here. i've been reading up on a lot of photograhers and contemporariy portrait artists, but i doubt thats something you'd be interested in.

oh, one last thing. i recently read Battlefield: Earth by L Ron Hubbard (sp?) and it was, suprisingly, an excellent read. if you're into sci-fi that is. even though it spawned what may be considered the worst movie of our generation, it turned out to be a very good book. didnt make even make me a scientologist either.

Did I ever tell you about the Ender's Game movie Scurvy? I dunno if it still is in the works but at one point it was.
