Tiny neighbour issue.

I live in a house divided into three apartments, and we all share the same DSL line. The neighbors in the one apartment above me isn't very proficient with computers, they can seem somewhat dumb quite frankly. They just hog the bandwidth with max upload speeds at times, making my ping in games bad, and the internet sluggish. I have all the equipment in my apartment, including the master switch, giving me control to just drag out their cable when I really need to play. I have disconnected them before, resulting in some hasty footsteps above.

Apart from this, they seem like decent guys, so I don't want to fuck up too much for them, they are just clueless about computers.

What would you guys do?

3 apts with 1 dsl line? dsl's max upload speed is what? 30kbps? pretty shitty, would be better off getting your own connection it would be worth the money

if they're that clueless, start consistently disconnecting them everytime they are using an unreasonable amount of the bandwidth. they'll figure that they're overloading the server or some shit and they'll stop eventually.

if they do a bit of research and confront you about it you can just say your computer was being ridiculously slow so you reset the connection to see if it helped. it wouldnt be untruthful and they'd get the idea in either outcome

The thing is that my landlord is impossible to deal with, I can guarantee that he will fuck something up if I get my own connection. He's a foreigner that barely knows Norwegian or English. He's been to court several times, and lost, but he is still renting out to almost 100 different apartments. The history with him is pretty long, so just take my word for it that getting my own connection (or cable-tv) is out of the question. I could easily afford it if I were able to do so. I even asked him to take 20$ more in rent from me alone, to pay for a upgrade on our internet. Having zero understanding and flexibility, even that got fucked up so I can't do it.

I have to deal this out with them, the line we have is good enough for 3 if everyone just uses some sense.

I have always wanted to find a way to gimp the lines of that specific apartment, but I have no clue how to go about doing it. I have full access to the main router settings, and I have looked for clues there.

And yes panda, I have been up there at two occasions, and I've specifically stated that I wanted to have a max 20 upload limit per apartment, so if two apts are uploading, the last one could still atleast have a chance to play. He said he'd do it, and he seemed sincere, I even explained how to do it.

Then maybe talk to him again, and tell him that if he keeps doing it that you'll unplug the cord so he can't upload at all? That way if he does do it, he'll get annoyed and eventually stop (hopefully).

If you do have access to the router's settings look for the option QoS. You should be able to make specific ports or devices priority over all others. So if it's Bittorrent the people upstairs are using a lot just make HTTP (80) and any other protocol you use regularly priority.

If they don't know shit about computers just tell them that there's something wrong with your connection which makes it mysteriously go down between 18-22
