1. Has music evolved through the years? Definitely. You can see a general progression of genre X influenced new genre Y which influenced new genre Z.

2. Is music evolving positively? Living in the now, it's hard to tell. Based on the 90's to today I'd say it's evolved in both positive and negative ways. But the positive seems to outweigh the negative.

3. Is the music scene effected by society? Always. Different genres and bands can be effected by what causes they join that are prevalent in our society.

4. Is society effected by the music scene? Yeah, a new band can create a new trend in fashion or lifestyle for the next few weeks to years.

5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop? Obviously not.

6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future? We have a blend of genres now, so definitely in the future as well.

7. Do you expect any "dead" genres of music to be "revived"? Disco 2010 ... ie: never.

8. Is the evolution of music (speeding up, slowing down, staying the same) due to the advancements in music distribution, ie: downloading/youtube? Definitely, since you can get your voice out there easier and cheaper than ever.

9. Are reality shows like American Idol (positively, negatively, not) affecting the music scene? Negatively. It makes no talent bums think they can all sing when they obviously can't and it floods the market with manufactured, poppy bullshit.

8) music is easier to obtain than ever before, conversely i'd also say that we've seen more creation of completely manufactured bands created by the music companies and reality t.v. purely aimed at making money and non creative but doing covers etc contributing little to musical history other than a footnote in crash marketing.

I believe that marketing companies are playing it safer than in say the 1970's and thusly talking less risks in what they back. However the internet means anyone can release music with a modest budget - getting a fan base without commercial backing is incredibly hard though and to influence music you need to be heard.

9) as soon as music could be put on vinyl and sold it became a commodity to be exploited. Shows like this are a cynical end product of this. People like them though and they rely on a public vote (or cash cow) so they contribute to the music scene in a positive way for them. For me i'd rather something different

1. It's changed that's for sure.

2. I think over the past century, because of technological improvements, much more leisure time has opened up for people (even if not for everyone), and this is good for music because leisure is what allows good music to happen. And I don't think only new music has to be created for music as an art to be in a good state. People going back and raising old works and putting them into a modern context with their own recordings and performances I think is good too, and also represents evolution, even if a new work per se isn't created. Music's no good if no one is listening to it. So I think there's a "music hygiene" in a sense. The music hygiene is good, that is, music is in a good state, when people are listening to good music, even if new works per se aren't being created.

5. I never seriously listened to hiphop (I understand rap to be a common technique of hiphop, but I guess other genres also use rap to some extent).

6. I'm not sure.

I think cultural preservation programs that modern states implement can revive many traditional forms that have more or less died under the gravitational influence (so to speak) of overarching cultures. So I would expect at least some "dead" genres to be revived. Anything else I'm not really sure of.

8. In one sense, yes: The new distribution systems let people get what they are looking for that much quicker, easier, and cheaper. This enables evolution because it gets more people into the music that interests them so that they in turn can contribute which causes evolution. In another sense, not really, because I believe evolution to be relative in a sense. When one might think that music is evolving slowly, one needs only change their scope and see how significant the "little" changes that occured were, and see how truly big they were for the time. Regardless of that, because, as I mentioned before, more people are into music, more is happening and so more is evolving; but that doesn't speak to the technological aspects.

9. I'm not sure. From my minor impressions of American Idol there is not really anything serious going on there musically, so in my humble opinion they are in one sense affecting it badly because it seems they could do better; in another sense, they not affecting it at all because what they do doesn't hurt the real contributions made by others.

Yes

It depends on how you look at it. It's significately different, but I don't know if you can really call it a positive or negitive change.

3. Is the music scene effected by society?
I think so. I mean, some bands I think change their sound to what's "in" to become more liked and accepted.

4. Is society effected by the music scene?
Yeah, just look at emo kids.

5. Have we reached an end in the music evolution process with rap/hiphop?
rap/hiphop has always changed and I think always will. It doesn't even look like it's ending.

6. Should we expect a blend of genres in the future?
I think there already is, somewhat... with punk with rap influence or hard rock with female vocalists and stuff like that.

Cool Jazz is comin back. grunge punk's not dead.

I think that should be obvious. I mean, with more means to distribute and hear new bands and artists, it's rapidly speeding up. Without the internet, I wouldn't like 9/10ths of the bands I like now/own CDs of and what not.

I don't see how it could negatively affect the music scene. The winners of these contests are obviously extremely talented and deserving. It really just gives someone with great music talent, who otherwise wouldn't be in the music scene, a chance to contribute to music.
