i worked on my truck some and wound up improving my mileage dramatically. apparently the previous owner had never changed the fuel filter, which wound up clogging the fuel injectors and straining the serpentine belt so i had to replace all three. i originally thought the problem was the starter (since the injectors were clogged, it took a few cranks to get the engine started).
i love rednecks. i was outside of my house trying to start my truck and my neighbor came over and was like "yup, sounds like a fuel line problem", and i was like "not the starter?" and he was like "sumbitch, i built this truck, it's not the starter" (he's a worker at the local GM plant which now makes H3's). his genetically-superior oneness with vehicles saved me money - didn't have to buy a new starter, and now i pay 30 bucks a week for gas, since i never drive more than half a tank now
