i find myself doing it more and more, mostly because i only recognize a pretty small percentage of the forum users these days.

this isn't the greatest analogy, but it's kind of like caller id. i see a number i don't recognize, i don't answer. here on the forums, i see a name i don't recognize, i skim past.
