  • iPhone G3

Wow so disappointing. Well at least this finally means the iPhone is coming to Canada. Maybe I'll get one when it comes out.

I wonder how much the new Samsung iphone clone will cost.

Sigh, I wish I could tell you what's coming down the pipe at RIM. They are comparing the BlackBerry Bold to the iPhone which is humorous since the Bold is an Enterprise focused device and it still blows the iPhone out of the water in many areas, including screen quality. The Bold I can discuss since it's already been revealed, the other devices I can't. Not that the iPhone sucks; it's a great for browsing and... impressing teenagers. I'm sure Apple will do really well with it, but they are not taking over the market anytime soon if any fanboys still believe that.

    Edit: and it's 3G not G3 :P

        Epinephrine:

I was utterly disappointed by the iPhone too. How can you not include a better camera, videoconferencing, etc. At the very fucking least give me a god damned copy paste option.

        EiG:

Talking about Thunder? Btw, I assume you work at RIM? I know a couple guys there also...most recently one of the guys came to speak for us. He was a founding member of our business frat chapter and gave out a few free blackberry curve way back when it first came out.

What's sad is that all of iPhone's competitors have it beat in like every category...minus Windows Mobile. Sony's Xperia, HTC Touch Diamond, Blackberrys, etc. all have vastly superior cameras and arguably better screen quality. Apple had the opportunity to take a huge chunk of market share if managed to address a few software issues and improve on the camera (put in the front too!). With all the hype, I feel really let down by the whole thing. Sorta sucks because my plan with Verizon expires in September and I'll be switching to a GSM carrier like ATT or Tmobile so I can use my phone globally in Shanghai.

As about the new Samsung phone. I'm excited for this, 5mp camera and like everything iPhone doesn't have. Hopefully the $200 amazing price on the iPhone convinces Samsung to subsidize the costs of the Omnia a bit also. Although I wouldn't mind paying a hundred or even two hundred more for the extra features. Should be interesting. Looking forward to this.

        Any more opinions?

          You guys are weird.

I'm pretty sure I haven't read any reviews of any phones that has the iPhone beat in every or most categories. If you really want a phone specifically with more megapixels, then go crazy. There are plenty. The iPhone offers a killer user interface. I would get the iPhone for the web browsing alone, which I know no other phones or mobile devices can beat. I will probably get a used EDGE phone off someone for cheap when the 3G comes out.

The new iPhone pretty much met expectations/rumors from last week: 3G, GPS, Exchange, App store. Plus: longer battery life, and it's now 1/2 the price.

3G iPhone disappointments: $10 more per month from AT&T for 3G. In store activation only (no web sales).

No fanboys are expecting a iPhone world domination. Steve set the goal for 1% of the market and he will more than get it. Go ahead and sell your AAPL if you like, I'm hanging on to my shares.

Umm I can't comment on which device or devices I was referring to, regardless of what sites like Engadget have posted  and yes I work at RIM, as a subscriber analyst. Ironically I'm one of maybe 50 employees out of 7,000 still only have an 8700 because I joined right before the 8800 or 8300 (Curve) came out and we have to wait 18 months for device upgrades (finance is about the only department that follows this rule).

I was amazed that Apple will be selling the new iPhone at $199 and $299. They are basically admitting that they were gouging early adopters of the original iPhone and they have obviously decided the service revenue gain from new subscribers will out weigh the loss in revenue per device sold.

Considering I sold my iPhone Saturday for $300 on Craigslist in anticipation, I'm pretty damn happy. While copy/paste would have been nice, I've only wanted to use it maybe twice since I got it last year, so that's not such a big deal for me. The camera/video issues don't really bother me either because I've got a real camera for high end photography and the prospect of mobile video conferences doesn't get me going - maybe a few years down the line. It would have been one of those cool features in conjunction with iChat, especially if they ported it to Windows.

All in all I'm really looking forward to this upgrade. It might just be that I'm living in the Silicon Valley and working in a progressive corporate environment that's really embraced and supported the iPhone (Stanford staff), but it works so much better for my job and life than Blackberry's current offerings. I just have to get by with this $20 Nokia for a month...

                    Nice, dude.

I work at this porn company and we have a lot of cool stuff coming down the wire soon but I'm not allowed to talk about it because of my stupid NDA, eh? The dumb thing is, when I first joined the company, I only got accounts to the older 'hairpie' and 'manhands' sites and then we released some new ones right after I started and I have to wait another 6 months to get passwords!

                    Also, ehPhone here, eh?

How I wish I could go into the details of my position even though I'd sound like such a nerd. I basically report on, analyze, control access to and maintain the most important data set of a $76 billion company. God damn insider trading laws

And yes, my job is my life!

This of course is assuming they make some marked improvements over the first generation. Companies like Apple and RIM (the one I work for) make their money off the hardware and not the data plans. They can't afford to sell devices for $100-200 unless they have been in the market for a long time or carriers themselves are willing to pay for the rebate."

They did not make significant improvements over the previous generation, hence my comment regarding a price point below $300 does not apply. Secondly the $199 price point for the 8 gig iPhone is just barely under the $200 threshold I mentioned and the 16 gig is over this threshold. Thirdly, I honestly didn't think Apple would go this route as it doesn't make good business sense. They are going to take a serious hit in hardware revenue and the fact that Apple stock went down today while RIM's went up just goes to show that analysts feel the same. I'll post one of the 15 PR Clips I received today quoting analysts who believe exactly what I've said if you would like.

Not sure what post 35 has to do with anything. I still think the iPhone is an amazing browsing device and if people want a smartphone primarily for surfing the internet then it's the ideal choice. It's 7 pm and I'm still sitting at my desk responding to posts because I live and breath this industry even though I'm no tech expert. I'll debate (not argue or rant) for hours on any topic related to the smartphone industry
