You don't believe we are free? We are free in America, the government doesn't care about pot smokers. They care about the ones who are selling the stuff. So you can't say that we aren't free, we are doing as we please, smoking pot.

Mayo's point is valid- just do it responsibly. Another reason pot is outlawed is because a LOT of people CAN'T do it responsibly, and thus rare situations similar to the kids with the gun (anti-pot commercial) happen, and thus one event creates a stereotype that this will happen everywhere. It's sad, but this is America- and we all know that you can't be free in America- that would just be stupid.

I too feel the Anti-Marijuana ads on TV are BS. When I get high, I don't go around picking up knives, looking at them thinking their cool, and start killing/stabbing people I'm around. Same with guns....

The only real harm it does is mess with your short term memory, just like alcohol does when you're drunk. And it causes cancer, like cigs. For that matter I'm sure anything you inhale, that isn't Oxygen, is harmful to you and your lungs.

    My two cents.

K... only read first few posts.

Marijuana IS BAD FOR YOU. Don't believe otherwise. It IS NOT HEALTHY. I still smoke it though, just thought I'd say that first so I don't sound like one of those weirdos who are for medicinal marijuana (although I am for it because the more people smoking weed in the world, the happier the world is). Basically if you're going to make the decision to smoke, make the decision to be responsible. Even when I first started smoking and got incredibly, incredibly, super blasted high, I still had the ability to weigh the consequences of my actions. If people who smoked weed didn't do stupid shit to base those commercials on, there wouldn't be those stupid commercials. Be safe with your highs, have a good time.

There's really no reason to think that pot would be all that much more expensive to grow than tobacco if legalized. It could grow in huge, huge fields. Not that much money would have to be spent on it. And as for wasting time? We'd may as well outlaw Subspace, too. Time I could be spending in college? College is the dumbest thing I've ever done. And a lot of people smoke in their teens/early twenties and then quit. Happens all the time without a "life-altering situatioin".

Dimboy you are yet to make a valid argument instead of just blurping up a sentence cops/parents/tearchers told you.

    Shear:
The price of pot would fall dramatically if it were to be legalized. Imagine how much money the drug buisniss has to spend to keep it safe, and avoiding the law. If you check out pot prices in areas like Christiania and Amsterdam, you'll see that it doesn't cost much to have a regular consumption of pot. Either way, you can use the very same argument as you used against alcohol. Ppl I know spend 40-50$ per weekend on getting drunk and going out. Nothing is so safe that it can't be abused, so if you know some ppl thats high all the time and got not money 4 further education you can blame them as individs.

Edit: I know plenty of ppl that mangies to toke while they are doing their higher educations. There are activities called jobs that allows you to spend more on whatever you want.

if you don't spend money on pot, you'll spend it on alcohol, or video games, or movies, or food, or other forms of recreation. will that prevent you from going to college or affording a car? maybe.. but that depends on how stupid you are at handling money.

and to answer your other question: pot's not physically addictive, but any habit you create CAN be psychologically addictive.

Conversely, the majority of it are lazy bastards already, and don't need pot to help us along in our slothiness. Essentially what you're saying is that pot is harmless, and there's no reason to spend money to keep it illegal. However, by buying it, you spend money yourself. I know you've said in the past that pot isn't addictive, and having not tried it I couldn't say myself, however, going to school with a shitload of pot-heads myself, I do know that once you start it, you're probably not going to stop, save the event of a critical life-altering situation. So thus, more money is spent, and you in turn have less money to spend on more important things, like college. The question to ask is, would you rather get high, which lasts up to a couple hours, or rather get an education, which will last a lifetime.

I'm not screaming "KEEP POT BANNED, ITS BAD SHIT!" or anything, use it as you please. I just don't think it's the smartest decision you can make.

The point is, pot is funamentally harmless. I've never seen anything bad happen as a result of pot, nevermind anything as bad as what happens in those commercials. I've NEVER seen a girl get more promiscuous as a result of pot, ever. It makes you lazy. That's about the worst consequence. I think the best reason for legalization is that they can't come up with a good reason to keep it illegal. Look at how much money they waste on law enforcement to keep a harmless drug off the streets. It's ridiculous.

For those who care to read it, there is the history. I only took a small exerpt from the website. Before anyone says it.. I have no ambition to be "cool" hehe.. just setting out some facts for the little discussion.

    http://www.tlmp.org/history_of_marijuana.html

The year the federal government outlawed cannabis.

-- DuPont patents petrochemical manufacturing processes for making plastics, as well as pollution-heavy sulfate/sulfite processes for producing wood pulp. For the next 50 years, these processes are responsible for 80% of DuPont's industrial output.

--In its 1937 Annual Report, DuPont informs stockholders that the company anticipates "radical changes" from "the revenue raising power of government... converted into an instrument for forcing acceptance of sudden new ideas of industrial and social reorganization."

March 29, 1937: The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upholds the National Firearms Act.

April 14, 1937: The Treasury Department secretly introduces its "marihuana tax bill" through the House Ways and Means Committee, bypassing more appropriate venues. Committee chairman Robert L. Doughton, a key Congressional ally of DuPont, rubber-stamps the bill.

Spring 1937: Congress holds hearings on the Marijuana Tax Act. Dr. James Woodward, representing the American Medical Association, testifies that the law could deny the world a potential medicine. Cannabis was already prescribed for dozens of common ailments, and medical researchers were just beginning to explore the therapeutic benefits of the numerous active ingredients in marijuana. Woodward said that AMA doctors were wholly unaware that the "killer weed from Mexico" was actually cannabis. "We cannot understand yet, Mr. Chairman, why this bill should have been prepared in secret for two years without any intimation, even to the profession, that it was being prepared," Woodward testifies. FBN commissioner Harry Anslinger and the Ways and Means Committee quickly denounce Woodward and the AMA, which already had an adversarial relationship with the Roosevelt administration.

December 1937: The Marijuana Tax Act is signed into law, initiating 60 years of cannabis prohibition and annihilating a multi-billion dollar industry. DuPont and other synthetic materials manufacturers reap vast profits by filling the void conveniently left by the criminalization of industrial hemp.

1937 - 1939: Under Harry Anslinger, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics prosecutes 3,000 doctors for "illegally" prescribing cannabis-derived medications. In 1939, the American Medical Association reached an agreement with Anslinger, and over the following decade, only three doctors are prosecuted.

February 1938: Popular Mechanics describes hemp as the "new billion dollar crop." The article was actually written in the spring of 1937, before cannabis was criminalized. Also in February 1938, Mechanical Engineering calls hemp "the most profitable and desirable crop that can be grown."

I wouldn't use it because it will burn away lots of THC. Alcohol kills it
