So I've heard this a couple of times, people who tell they were arrested and had to go to jail or are on parole or god knows what.

And they are all between 18 and 25 years old, a bit young, right?

So why is this, are the kids in the USA fucked up?

Probably because it was all mostly due to possession charges. Our prison systems are over flooded with non-violent drug users (mainly marijuana smokers)

I think it's important to differentiate the difference between jail and prison. Jail is county, generally reserved for misdemeanor offences which would mean a year or less of incarceration. Prisons are state and for felons serving more then a year.

Probably a pretty good distinction to make. However, I'm still against going to jail, even if it's only for a couple of hours. Also against simple possession fines in excess of a thousand dollars. And our good ol' boy cops take you to jail 90% of the time, especially if it's the university, sled, or county cops. For the most part, the city cops are 50/50 friendly/hard asses.

Once you would get locked up in Europe as a kid, most of the time your life is worthless. Kids who go there are children who cause trouble all the time and are no good for this society.

Yeah, jail is a bigger thing in Europe than here in the U.S. Jail really isn't normal here though, just some people you know have problems etc.. but not people who are "no good for society" though. Not that bad lol.

THis is the conventional wisdom of our government. They'd rather put thousands, not hundreds of people in prison instead of reforming the laws and addressing the issue. Instead they're just "throwing it away" for a while in jail, and refusing to take any other stance.

Hopefully the days of thinking like this are numbered.

Which is why the recidivism rate is so high...



We focus more on punishment and less on rehabilitation. We don't focus on helping criminals, so once they get out there's a 75% that they're commit another crime (and get caught) within 3 years (or something like that, don't feel like looking it up now).
