Not too mention those who are innocent of their crimes are sent in there because of certain reasons (I.e. racism, person knows too much [like someone who might be a danger to government corruption or whatever], was in the wrong place and at the wrong time, etc..) as well as criminals who learn to become better criminals, becoming career criminals (I.e. learning better ways of smuggling illicit drugs [check out the movie Blow if you haven't by now], or learning how to create bombs, or learning newer ways of killing people)

It's strange talking to people who are on parole or something, even if they only used drugs -> it isn't 'normal'.

Drug use is one thing, but depending on the State in which you get busted in can be the factor upon if and how long you'd be going to jail.

zeta-burn who was an asshole on these forums yrs back got busted for drugs...in his situation he was caught in a situation that was not just posession, of which can be a slap on the wrists, but his was intent to sell. On top of this he had resisted arrest added along with stolen property in the stolen car he was caught in. Oddly enough they dropped most of the charges and he made bail and upon awaiting his trial on bail he was caught outside of the Pennsylvania where he was on bail to be caught in New Jersey on a posession charge again with intent to sell with stolen property and this was the biggie in NJ...concealed illegal handgun. You do not go into NJ with any gun whatsoever that is not licensed! Long story short, PA transferred his sentance with skipping bail by leaving the state thus allowing NJ to do as they wish. He will not be up for parole for at least another 10 years.

What a dumbass kid, as he just turned 21 in prison. Nice way to throw your life away.

However if you were to actually educate yourself on the matter you would know that the "convicts" sent to Australia were either political, or products of a injust social and legal system.. No murderers or rapists were ever sent here.
Most were people who basically had the balls to go out and steal food or valuables to pay for food. This was a time in England when the working class were treated as slaves.. The Peel government feared the inevitable revolution of the masses and so inacted various means to remove the strongest-willed from the population.
The result being that England effectively "watered-down" their gene pool and created a new nation of beer-swilling, sports-loving, hardass'.

Re: rates of incarceration in the U.S... The privatisation of prisons and semi-forced labour of its inmates has created an extremely lucrative industry. Now you have private companies making millions off of prisoners... Is fucked for many reasons but one of the more obvious is that rehabilitation has become counter-productive to their profit margins.
