It's radio-wave noise, not a sound noise. As an engineer, I can tell you that scientists make mistakes all the time. It's possible that this was a mistake, and it's also possible that it was equipment malfunction. It's also possible that it could have been a chain-reaction supernova, which might explain the magnitude of the radio signal only being at one location.

As a scientist I can say engineers assume they know too much all the time.

I think if it had been an equipment malfunction, or if it could have been explained by some type of phenomena they probably would have discovered that BEFORE releasing their results.

Doesn't matter if it's a legitimate new find or not, the information they have is way to vague for any of it to really mean anything significant anyway. Basically they are just saying, "what the fuck, we don't know what this is, do you?".
