  • Expelled - The Movie

This is a great movie discussing Intelligent Design and Darwinism. Think Ben Stein was spot on. A+

Edit: this isnt a thread to bash on other people, simply one to discuss the movie. Maybe even add what you would have liked added in the movie.

I'm pretty sure that basically nobody respects movie - including the religious community. A quick glance at some reviews reveals a poorly made, Michael Moore-ish, boring piece of reactionary bullshit. But I guess I'll have to watch it myself one day.

this movie talks about how people who even bring up the topic, are shunned from the community. Most scientist cant even begin to explore other things because of the problem of being shunned. They leading scientist at the Smithsonian was canned for mentioning "intelligent design"

This is one of those instances where the reviews are right.

The base of his argument has some merit, that academia should be open to all ideas, but the ridiculous parallels drawn are pulled directly from "rival documentarian Michael Moore's fat ass".

                  - "I'm comparing my speaking to Reagan's 'Tear Down This Wall' speech."
                  - Darwin believers are just like the Nazis when push comes to shove.

And that's not even taking into account that I have first-hand experience with the guy they talked to from Iowa State--the guy is a certifiable douchebag, and that's before taking any science/religion into account.

After a viewing, it seems like Ben Stein saw how much money Michael Moore and Al Gore ("and the bongwater brigade, that's who") made off their movies, then copied the style and reversed the viewpoint.

                  Booooring.

Good points Conc but; Stein's interests in Intelligent Design stems from his belief that science, and by association scientists today, should bare some responsibility for the holocaust. Their predecessors leading his ancestors into the showers... Stein himself being Jewish.

that maybe so, however does he not bring up logical points that when it comes to science to question everything? We now know the earth isnt flat. But at one time or another it was bad to think else wise. The thing that got me also was how most of the ashiest would agree with intelligent design if it was aliens who set up life here. However any mention of god was ruled out definitely. Also i thought it was great when he asks them how that single life source (cell) came about. They said things like, on the back of crystals. Over all i think he did a good job of getting both view points

This is used not to shock or offend people, it's a logical paradox put forward to ID proponents. If something supernatural created and guided humanity then that entity must also have been created. If life can not emerge on its own then it (logically) negates the possibility of life being designed.

He does and as Conc said it's the only argument worth a penny in the entire production but what these people fail to understand is that the scientific method is structured to remove observer bias, challenge prevailing ideas and theories and always attempts to disprove the status quo; ultimately leading to a greater understanding and newer questions.
It is more then adequate. But what the creationism camp want is to change the scientific method to allow its requirements to extend far outside the natural, testable world. So that instead of new theories explaining natural phenomenon and providing new questions, advancing our understanding and quality of life: the pursuit ends with nothing new known or sought. Every answer to each question that's worth a damn is some unsee powerful force (read God) did it.

I'm not anti-spiritual and I'm not an atheist. I believe if someone wants to believe in God that evolution and creation can co-exist but both can not cross into each other's domain.

but was the point of the movie to not point out, that instead of closing all barriers to science they should open them up for people to explore, Theres big holes in both evolution and intelligent design. As the movie stated darwin at the time, was indeed the outcast when it came to his idea. Who knows maybe theres a round 2. Id at least like to see society allow scientist to explore more methonds then one for a true answer. Instead of them being shunned.

                              vyk-

Two of the biggest weaknesses of evolutionary theory are:
                              1. There is no adequate explanation for the origin of life from dead chemicals. Even the simplest life form is tremendously complex.
                              2. The fossil record, our only documentation of whether evolution actually occurred in the past, lacks any transitional forms, and all types appear fully-formed when first present. The evidence that "pre-men" (ape-men) existed is dubious at best. So called pre-man fossils turn out to be those of apes, extinct apes, fully man, or historical frauds.
But does anyone not agree that science shouldnt have put barriers on themselves. Let say they open up the discussion to intelligent design and have been given the chance to research it with todays technology. It certainly has to be better than research from 150 years ago. And if it isnt and it is a complete fail, then evolutionist get what they want in the end. I think the movie was very clear in explaining this.
