lets see. knowing a typical Japanese person is highly more intelligent then lets say, average American, i believe they came to realize something that has bothered me for a year now. This whole meaning of life, to basically go to school to earn the right for a good job, so that you can pay to live in this world. It pisses me off that its like that, but its definitely true. I read upon this on numerous occasions and i truely believe this era is modern slavery.

college is nothing but a certificate saying your qualified to do highly paid work, like its proving to the companies of the world you are a puppet who doesnt ask questions, and that is exactly what their looking for. I dont care if you (anyone) disagrees or not, but 4+ years of college to do something repetitive for the rest of your life is retarded in my eyes. I guarantee in less then 2 years of hands on work for someone who barely passed highschool would get you same results as someone who graduated a 5 year college and is doing the exact same job. Since im from Europe, people go from middle school straight to college of their choice, or better yet, a highschool that focuses on 1 main subject that colleges here in America tend to establish for anyone claiming their major.

In the end, it makes me wonder if living in this world is even worth it...ofcourse, im not suicidal, i see myself as a survivor who finds escape from this modern slavery in myself. Writing a book, using own talent to work for yourself, create income through music maybe, i believe that is true escape from this slavery that tends to overwhelm these Japanese people who have an average of 12 hour work days...what exactly goes through their mind as most of them sit in their cubicles typing away, as their bosses urge them to go have more sex, and more of these ridiculous ways of keeping them sane.

it bothers me to know this shit is real and it makes me questions alot of ethics of different cultures, their beliefs and ways of thinking.

the suicide im not surprised in, because im sure the Japanese see it as an honorable way to die, ultimately bringing enlightenment of some sort to their life and death...doesnt make it true but you cant really tell a christian that Jesus was human either, if you catch the drift.

Get your facts straight, America has one of the highest fertility rates in the developed world.

Just like Japan, Europe will see its population and its share in the world shrink for decades and perhaps centuries to come, making us go from one of the most populous to one of the least populated continents in the future, whereas North-America will continue to grow. What's bad is that even Russia is counted in those figures, so there will be even less 'Western' Europeans left.

Sometimes when I'm on campus and I've got a little bit of time before my next class, I like to log onto the TW forums and be entertained with the ignorance and overall dumbness with which some of the people on this forum possess.

It used to be obvious who was trolling and who wasn't, but these days some people on these forums really are that dumb, and they're posting genuinely.

I've never lived in Japan so I can't really comment on why this is happening, I have some theories but I'm not going to judge unless I live there or I've got enough information to really make a call.

Edit: I disagree with you Royce, at least on the aspect of college. I believe college, at least in it's design (and for me personally), is there to motivate people to ask questions.

Asian Americans on the whole seem generally more intelligent than the average American because these are first or second generation immigrants whose parents were born in China, Japan, Korea, or some other country in the Orient. Throw in some genetics and stereotypes and you can safely assume that these parents have some sort of skill or intelligence valued by the US Government that have enabled them to able to apply for and receive immigration visas to come to the US. Focusing only on immigrants who apply for a Visa on his or her own abilities (and not say, an application by a wife or child of a person already living in the US), there are thousands and tens of thousands of Visa applicants denied each year; obviously in the face of so many applicants, the US would only accept the brightest (and not communist) individuals who would be able to contribute something to their country, and it just happens that these individuals are also more likely to produce above average offspring (except for the Japanese and their cousin marriage incest spawns).

And I actually checked, though Japan has a lot of suicides, % wise Japan doesn't have the highest rate of suicides.

Yes it came off as a troll post, but my point is that its a different culture. Case in point: many Americans love their dogs and will overpay to take them to the vet and will even let them on their furniture/bed to sleep. People in the arab world wonder how we can do this, because they hate dogs. And we wonder how Asian families can have dogs, take care of them, then turn around and eat them.

What some newbie said about 'its a different culture, so of course you cant hold them to our standards' or something to that nature is right, but he put it nicer than I did. It's not relevant to us because while we dont have those specific problems, we have others that they laugh at about us, such as people winning million dollar lawsuits for spilling hot coffee on themselves cause there wasnt a warning label on it.

What good does it make for any of us to evaluate in a serious manner what THEIR problems are when we havent evaluated our own various problems?

And is there any statistic saying what the average work day is in Japan? Because you all are acting like because some asshole news article said that its not uncommon for people to work 12 hour shifts, that everyone in Japan works 60 hour+ weeks. Heres a clue: we have people that work 12 hour shifts here...they work panama shifts usually so that they're not overburdened. I consider America to be one of the hardest working modernized countries overall because I heard that most Euro countries have 35 hour work weeks and know they have more holidays.

Seems I was right, but we really dont have shit on Korea's avg 45 hr work week LOL. And I wonder how those stats are done, because the standard work week is 40 hours and those numbers come out to 34. Must include part time workers. Anyways, Japan has an avg of 51 more hours of work per year than America, so instead of 34 hours a week, its 35. Is that extra hour making people committ suicide? rofl, I doubt it. This is a common sense lesson to all of you not to go reading in bullshit from articles you find online. Euro countries for the most part as I expected, are well behind the standard set by (North) America and Asian countries. I'd be interested to see an updated chart, but I doubt anything changed too drastically.
