  • CBC Bareboned?

Recently the CBC has announced it will cut 800 jobs, according to the site they will cut over 300 jobs from from the English services, and over 300 from the French services. The CBC looked to the Conservative government for support, however that support has been denied. CBC's shortfall in revenue has to do with the lack of advertisement dollars available in relation to the economic meltdown we've been experiencing.

This issue of whether the Conservative government should or shouldn't step in has been debated back and forth, but realistically the opposition is limited in their ability to sway the current governments decision.

Coming from a fairly Centrist person, I had mixed feelings when I first heard the story. After discussions with current and former employees I feel that these cuts are overwhelmingly a good thing, regardless of how they're being portrayed. The CBC has been known to produce shows that don't always have the audience that demands the funds put into their programming. The CBC is being forced to rethink their future and what programs they feel are important for Canadians, and more so what Canadians actually want. With a lack of funding you'll also see an increase in people who take early retirement or continue on part-time, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. CBC will be looking for people who will work for free, fresh new minds looking for internships will eventually shape the CBC in the coming years. Considering it's much more cost efficient to pay someone fresh out of College or University than someone who has been working for you for 30 years. As harsh as it sounds, out with the old and in with the new.

i'm not exactly well informed on this subject but i heard cbc radio 3 is going to be shut down. that upsets me, i really enjoy a couple shows on there and it's one of the best places for new canadian music to be broadcast.

but yeah, hopefully they start putting out more quality shit now that they have to be particular.

The Steven and Chris show is on hiatus, YES

This Hour has 22 Minutes has given a serious lack in funding, why not scrap this all together? Canadian comedy shows that have a political spin suck.

I think Rick Mercer does a good job with his show. The rest of them, I completely agree with you although THH22M and RCAF had some funny moments.

I'm surprised and I'm not that the government wouldn't give them any money (big time fence sitter) but I suppose it's good to let failing businesses fail. Especially those that run programs like Steven and Chris.

If Jeen is right about them cutting radio3, that would be a shame because tbh that and Hockey Night in Canada are about the only things a watch/listen to from CBC.

Edit: Cops, do you think shows like Being Erica are giving us a better rep?

People are watching shows like Being Erica, so that's a start. I'm not focused on the reputation as much as I am people actually watching the content we produce. However, I think a lot of girls and teenagers are into that show, even my girlfriend watches it religiously.

Little Mosque on the Prairie is another show people actually watch, which would be stupid to cut. I have limited knowledge on CBC Radio 3, but if a lot of people listen to it then why cut it when there's a million other things that could be cut. CBC has some affiliation with The Tudors, exactly how much and what the CBC officially does I'm unsure of. One thing is clear those kinds of shows that appeal to a wide audience is the type of content that will help the Canadian media market grow.

I love Dragons Den and can't wait for the next season. This show proves that Canada can take an American or British product and make it better.

I met a person who works on Dragons Den, I don't want to give away their name in case it comes back to bite me in the ass.

But they basically said Dragons Den might not last too much longer. The judges have been known to turn down some impressive ideas, which has made some people really successful. I understand why people like the show, it just doesn't interest me.

I was kinda taken back when I first read about this, but I do agree with most of what you said Cops. Things like this are going to happen over the next while, and we need to tighten our belts and trudge onward. To be honest, I rarely watch CBC unless hockey playoffs are on. I heard they're dropping The Simpsons too. I don't listen to any of their radio either, only radio I ever really listen to is Chez 106.1, our oldest classic rock station here in Ottawa.

As for the other stuff here, I liked RCAF, and the old This Hour when it had Mercer, and his own Report. Hell it's the closest thing we have to a canadian Daily Show or whatever right? I want someone making fun of our politics in a news anchor-like fashion damnit! The newer this hour stuff sucked imo.

They could generate monies by selling the DVD series of "Made In Canada" with Rick Mercer. Maybe that could help on a small fraction of the monies they need. Oddly enough, they are eliminating this DVD title after they only released the 1st 4 epsiodes on 1 DVD. I thought that this was a great series, yet it seems that they would rather shelf this and never allow this to air or be sold.

This was a great show even here in the States! It happened to be called "The Industry" here and was shown on PBS, but this was one of my favorite series. Shit, if they can make money off of selling Seinfeld DVD's why couldn't the CBC sell some of the series people enjoyed, rather than deleting and hiding them from ever being seen again.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
