Recently the CBC has announced it will cut 800 jobs, according to the site they will cut over 300 jobs from from the English services, and over 300 from the French services. The CBC looked to the Conservative government for support, however that support has been denied. CBC's shortfall in revenue has to do with the lack of advertisement dollars available in relation to the economic meltdown we've been experiencing.
This issue of whether the Conservative government should or shouldn't step in has been debated back and forth, but realistically the opposition is limited in their ability to sway the current governments decision.
Coming from a fairly Centrist person, I had mixed feelings when I first heard the story. After discussions with current and former employees I feel that these cuts are overwhelmingly a good thing, regardless of how they're being portrayed. The CBC has been known to produce shows that don't always have the audience that demands the funds put into their programming. The CBC is being forced to rethink their future and what programs they feel are important for Canadians, and more so what Canadians actually want. With a lack of funding you'll also see an increase in people who take early retirement or continue on part-time, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. CBC will be looking for people who will work for free, fresh new minds looking for internships will eventually shape the CBC in the coming years. Considering it's much more cost efficient to pay someone fresh out of College or University than someone who has been working for you for 30 years. As harsh as it sounds, out with the old and in with the new.
