So while the U.S economy sinks and you all drown in your own feces.. Australia is sustaining a low population with minimal impact on the environment, and has a socio-economic structure that will preserve a very high standard of living.

Ridiculous arguments, considering the size of the countries compared and the vast differences in makeup of the environment and conditions applied to certain areas.

Look at Australia and BHP Billiton and its Nickel mine for example. As Australia may have great mineral resources available, it still does not help that it costs more for Australia to mine and meet diminished demands for certain items. The BHP Billiton Nickel mine of which had only been operational for eight months closed at a cost and waste of 3 billion dollars and not to leave out that a town was financed & created to handle all the workers of which now have nothing for the most to fall back on with the mine closing and they are being forced from their homes as the town is being dismantled. So this so called " socio-economic structure that will preserve a very high standard of living" seems to sound great but falls short. Australian exported mineral demands have fallen worldwide in noting it can be obtained extremely cheaper from other countries as well as the overall demand has fallen to such a degree that business are flocking to set up in other countries that offer cheaper labor and more profit margins from the mined minerals.

These problems are seen worldwide; Australia is not immune to all the problems this world faces noting today’s economic and environmental issues at hand.

Australia is not immune to many of the problems the US faces, such as droughts and extreme fires that can devastate an entire town and effect major cities. Just look at Australia’s fresh water demands, as they are noted as having problems due to run-off waste from mining, agriculture and human development as to what TagMor says has created “a cesspool of waste and pollution".

To say Australia is immune to the environmental, work force and pollution problems that the US faces is somewhat odd. Australia will have the same problems the US has, maybe not at this moment, but all things follow a similar pattern and who knows...perhaps it will hit Australia worse than it has the US?

The differences between the top 25 countries in that list are so marginal that any person claiming to be able to 'rank' the quality of life in different countries on the basis of that mathematical formula is probably equally as marginalised in terms of intelligence.

I'd say props to the US for being able to maintain such a high ranking for such a big population.
