Why not try to preserve the "forests" by taking time out and survey each tree one at a time or even just in small portions? How would you know what the problem is in an entire forest when you don't take time to test for diseases, malnourishment, taking in what's going on within the wildlife surrounding the forest, and so on and so forth?

Though if you meant the metaphor more so in that we're just helpless trees and the "people" you speak of are some tree hugging activists then I wouldn't put to much faith in it/them. There are "people" out there working with more power and faster to deforest those trees than there are trying to save them.

here are some individual trees i see in this forest (this metaphor is hilarious)
-free speech is now illegal on the gulf coast
-moves are being made to bring the internet under federal "supervision" (the 'kill switch', net neutrality, etc)
-photographing the police will apparently land you in jail
-...while a police officer who drives drunk and kills someone gets nothing but a week's suspension
-rising debt
-inflationary moves by the fed
-increased power for the fed
-california putting thousands of govt workers on minimum wage
-the dollar hegemony is being edged out for a world currency
-increased intervention in many areas of life

That's actually a really good point. If everyone is a tree, who or what are the so called "caretakers" of the "forest?" And why aren't they trees too? How come they have special powers?

But, the reality is that we're all the same. You can't go put on a costume (e.g. cop uniform) and all of a sudden change fundementally.

I'm not the one who brought up the tree metaphor. And, I'm definitely not the one assigning special powers to trees.

I'm saying we're all the same. You're human, and I'm human. There is nothing stopping you from putting on a police uniform except your own willingness to do so. And, if you decided to act as a police officer, your fundemental properties do not change. You don't become a different being.

Whether you are tall, black, a writer, a construction worker, an architect, a police officer, a king etc, that doesn't change your fundemental properties as a human.

There is universal prefered behavior. That's why you didn't like it when that officer shoved you into the back of his car.

I'm not saying there aren't people who aggress against others or that there isn't evil in the world. I'm saying that putting on a costume doesn't absolve one from evil.

In other words just because that man is classified as an officer, that doesn't mean you weren't aggressed against. His title, his uniform doesn't justify his actions. There is nothing that will justify the violence he used against you.

Currently, there isn't much one can do about it because such men are protected by an army. Military might doesn't give one moral ground just as an abusive parent doesn't make hitting his/her child right.

In other words, bullying people doesn't become moral because the victim can't stop it.
