How big is it in your countries?

In Sweden the only thing happening is a lot of posters about the election and a lot about the pirateparty due to IPRED (I cry inside when I think about it) and The Pirate Bay getting the sentence.

NOTHING, literally NOTHING about other parties except on the internet.

What about you?

Over here (Netherlands) it's only posters on the street etc. as well. Imo, it's not as big as it should be, considering that more than half of all new legislation in EU states is EU law rather than national law.

I'm concerned about the turnout as well, every single election has seen a drop compared to the previous one. That's pretty stupid, especially since the proposed Treaty of Lisbon will transfer more power to the parliament if the Irish would stop obstructing it - so that makes it all the more important to vote and I would personally urge any European to do so.

I think you'll only understand this if you know anything about an EU legislative procedure, which, I hate to admit, isn't known with over 95% of the population. It isn't as much about transferring pure power in the sense of stripping more sovereignty as it is about promoting transparency.

Currently, the Council of the EU (Consilium) doesn't necessarily need the parliament's assent to push acts through in certain area's of policy. The treaty will reinforce the system of checks and balances by expanding the so called "codecision procedure" into more area's of policy than is now the case. Also, what's even worse, the Consilium often negotiates behind closed doors so no one actually knows what's going on. However, when the treaty gets approved, this too will change as all meetings of the Consilium are then obliged to be held in public.

Coincidentally, I'm gonna have a lecture next week on the importance of the European elections. I'm looking forward to get more informed, I feel truly sorry that so many people aren't.
