Sometimes I think the fact that 70% of my class being Jewish put different emphasis on the curriculum. Maybe not.

Paul: no idea what this unit you're talking about is.

Over in California you learn about how great WWII was and how Indiana Jones can kick some serious Nazi butt. Then in 11th grade you get a disgruntled-fat-homosexual-hippy-teacher who says, "Hey! Nuclear bombs are bad, mkay." And you shrug it off knowing in your heart of hearts that it's okay to kill 3 Japs now to save one Marine later. A new Indiana Jones movie only confirms your belief that USA is good and Nazis are bad and this idea is strenghthened when Nazis start popping up everywhere like in Street Fighter movies and Jean Claud Van Damn is like, "Let my legs show you how nothing has changed about USA still being able to kick the shit out of evil Nazi butt!" And you can't help but nod your head knowing that it is perfectly natural to be in a movie theater watching Jean Claud Van Damn doing bicycle kicks into Bison's Nazi plans for world domination. That worldview continues until it is shattered in sophomore year when you learn about the fire bombings at Dresden when we decided to burn 600,000 refugees and the hub of art and culture with no military targets except an abondonded train yard. Where do I go from here cruel world?

Why am I not getting many non-north american responses here? I know you were war torn for two millenia, but I would think that WWII might be a talking point in your history class at one point.

I don't think we discussed WWII that much in class, actually. In fact, I have no memory at all of it...but I guess I'm just wrong here, someone else from .fi has to say something!

Someone from .nl ok too? Personally I don't really care about WW2 and to me it's like it never happened. A lot of people my age probably feel that way. I don't cherish any hatred towards the Germans either, in fact I even admire some of their sensible policies and economic efficiency sometimes. I don't really remember in detail how it was explained to me in (high) school so I can't tell you about that.

An event that killed hundreds of thousands of people, changed economic and diplomatic developments and introduced nuclear power was not taught to you in high school? Americans don't hate the Germans, Italians or Japanese anymore either, but such a global event where every country was involved must have been taught to you?

Not to mention the largest genocide of the 20th century.

I didn't say it wasn't taught, I just pointed out that no one really cares anymore. I memorized most of what is to know about the subject just to pass some exams, then I forgot about it. This kind of attitude probably explains why you get so few European replies; we don't care anymore. After being war-torn for two millennia we finally managed to make war not only materially and politically impossible, but unthinkable. So why do we need to care as much as you want us to? Sometimes I get the feeling (North-)Americans care more about it than we do (nothing personal).
