Has anyone on the moderator level ever wanted to ban someone, but the rules didn't allow them?
Has anyone below a moderator ever wanted someone banned or otherwise punished because they're just annoying?
Well, where certain posts don't necessarily credit a banning, I think that the community should have the power to rate them.
I'm sure that several of you are aware of moderating techniques such as disemvoweling to curb attitudes on forums. I think that this forum could benefit from that.
Ideally, users could rate posts and if a certain percentage of viewers deems a post, say, "thumbs down," then that post gets disemvowelled (all of the vowels are removed, thereby crippling the post in general, but not removing it). Another technique is setting up the system so that when a bad post is perceived, that it is removed from general view, but the original poster still sees it, and he has no idea that it's been removed (he'll be ignored, but it probably won't curb any future behavior).
What do you think? Would you be in favor of a user-based rating system where ultimately you get to decide which posts stick around? Does that seem too 1984-ish? Would so many people get annoyed, leave and the forums would crash? (Honestly, if the last occurred, then good riddance, right?)
