This was ulitmately the time of my life...
My friend and I arrived at the dropzone around 7:30 and it was foggy as hell. But i figured after our training the fog would lift and we'd be set to go.
So we meet our trainer, and he was so hungover. He smelt of booze, but really it didn't bother me because i figured this guy says he has done over 1700 jumps and hasn't died yet. So i figure he's legit and if i die who cares anyways.
After all the training and waiting for the fog to clear we get all geared up and into the plane. Man i feel a little apprehension as we are climbing and the instructor is showing me his altimetre (sp?) periodically. When we get up to 5000 feet he straps himself to me, because a guy is jumping from 5000 feet for his solo certification. "Don't do anywhere without me okay?" he says, i don't respond because i'm getting a little nervous.
So the door closes and we continue the ascent. We get to about 10000 feet and he says "Great View eh?" I nod because i can't speak, i'm fucking nervous as hell. There's guys all around laughing and joking and high fiving and stuff. I look at my buddy and he's joking with his instructor.
As we near our height of 13000 feet i'm getting pretty nervous and the instructor checks the attachments for him to me. and he says "no turning back now! and remember to breathe." I smile and nod.
At the height of 13000 feet The solo jumpers all go and jump. The tandems are up next. Damn i'm really nervous, i think to myself. So There's this girl with another instructor infront of me. And as they are moving towards the door she starts having a major freakout!!!! Wailing, and i hear "ONE...TWO THREE!!!!" and her and her tandem partner are gone! I can't hear anything, then the entire group of people left in the plane start laughing hard!
I'm up next, shit i think to myself this is it. I'm done. My instructor Chad, who started chewing gum, so he doesn't just smells of liquor, it's minty now too, and i get up and walk to the door. More of a kind of shuffle, but whatever. So we stand up in the door. Chad says "Be cool, breathe, ready, set, GO!" he throws us out of the plane!
SHIT i'm falling to my death. I regain my bearings. This is arlgiht we're controlled, flying fast. We fell for about a minute, He taps me on the shoulders so i can grab my harness so he can open the chute. The chute flies open magestically! We're falling less fast now and we're talking like nothing! the harness around my right leg/groin is hurting me. But it's kind of cool. I feel a little light headed but i'm alright taking in the views. Chad hands me the toggles so he can adjust my leg strap so it doens't hurt anymore.
Ah much better. We float to the ground for 5 minutes or so just shooting the shit.
We land, kind of come in and slide on our butts. Soft landing. I'm so happy to be back on the ground. Chad unhooks us we sharke hands and start heading back in. My friend James and i meet up and high five and talk about our experience.
I hope you enjoyed my story
If you haven't tried skydiving, give it a go. If you're afraid to go by yourself. Go try a tandem jump Like we did. It's pretty much safer than driving a car to work in the morning.
Take care
