Just finished plowing through the entire series. I was skeptical when that old thread by Facetious brought the show to my attention and the first few episodes didn't hook me so I quit because cop shows aren't generally my thing (this was like 3 years ago). Well I started again a couple months ago and I stand 100% corrected - I should have taken your recommendation more seriously, Face and others. Here are some of my thoughts after reading this thread and other peoples' opinions.
I liked the seasons in this order: 3>1>4>2>5
My favorite characters:
Cops: Lestor
Drug lords: Prop Joe
Low levels/thugs: Snoop
Ports: Nick Sobotka's girlfriend's boobs
City government: Norman Wilson (Carcetti's chief of staff and advisor)
Schools: Michael I guess
The Paper: Gus
And of course, everyone's favorite and MVP of the show, Omar.
Least favorites:
Cops: Kima (she went from bad to worse to maddeningly horrible, even if the season 5 plot was silly)
Drug lords: Marlo (boring kingpin; in a series filled with awesome drug lord he stands out like a sore thumb)
Low levels/thugs: Chris (see above, boring and undeveloped outside of being a molestation victim and having a family he supposedly cares about)
Ports: Frankly all of them, but Nicky was an annoying moron
City government: Nerese Campbell (just a bitch and ultimately not believable, someone would have edged her out long ago in politics had she been real)
Schools: Randy (snitch fuck)
The Paper: Thomas Klebanow (shit-eating editor just above Gus you always wanted to punch in the head)
Since I gave Omar at the end I'll give a LVP: Carver. Bad acting, worse and most useless role.

I've seen The Wire, in its entirety, probably 5 times. I love Brother Mouzone. "I always tell you to get Harpers, and you always forget it." He and his little man servant's tiffs make me laugh.
Also from season 3, I love the parliamentary drug meetings. "Does the chair recognize that we gonna be seen as a bunch of punk ass bitches?"

Brother Mouzone: You're the perfect bait. They will view you as conflicted, you're homophobia is so visceral.
Lamar: See that. I haven't even walked in the place yet and you're already calling me a cocksucker.Originally posted by ToneWomen who smoke cigarettes are sexy, not repulsive. It depends on the number smoked. less is better

Jay Landsman, the fat head sergeant in Homicide, is a comedy goldmine
"From everything we've given you, fire should be shooting out your ass. But no, there you sit like a genital wart."
"You know what he is? He is a vandal. He is vandalizing the board. He is vandalizing this unit. He is a Hun, a Visigoth, a barbarian at the gate, clamoring for noble Roman blood and what's left of our clearance rate."
"There is some charm to a woman in uniform. But the fact remains we work plain clothes in Homicide. Not to say that the clothes need be plain. For you, l would suggest some pantsuits muted in color. Something to offset Detective Moreland's pinstriped, lawyerly affectations and the brash, tweedy impertinence of Detective Freamon."
"Rawls and Foerster have crawled up my backside and they're gonna stay there until you find Dozerman's gun. Now, I would like it very much if I could unclench my ample ass cheeks, if you don't mind, and rid myself of that discomfort."
by far the funniest character.

Stringer Bell is British, and that is mind melting.
Also, Alma (the female reporter) is married to D'Angelo Barksdale (who is an accomplished stage actor outside of this show) in real life.
And the dude that played Avon also played the D End in Remember the Titans.Originally posted by ToneWomen who smoke cigarettes are sexy, not repulsive. It depends on the number smoked. less is better

Yeah, McNulty was in Rockstar. That terrible movie with Marky Mark singing hair metal songs. It's not so strange to hear his accent, but Idris, yes...It was also odd to see him on The Office, and Beadie as well.
Also, I love the little details of this show, real and not. For instance, Detective Ed Norris, real life former Baltimore Police Commissioner who was convicted for fraud and did jail time. And the real life Jay Landsman plays the lieutenant of the Western Disctrict.
