Friendly bacteria getting killed by antibotics weakens your immune system in itself, right? So you already answered your own question, even if you want to go deeper into it.

In my opinion the biggest danger here is that the overuse of antibiotics will in fact cause resistance to antibiotics in bacteria. I suppose you could compare it to herbicides: when a company designs herbicide-proof plants they can spray tons and tons of herbicide on their plants. One of the millions and millions of bad plants may survive due to 'genetically random' herbicide-resistance. As a result an entire new species arises; a herbicide-resistant plant which can no longer be suppressed. If we do the same thing to our bodies and our bacteria, some day bacteria will become resistant to our antibacteria. The day this happens, we are in trouble.

@ Kthx, I don't quite think your body stops building an immune system when you feed it antibiotics. On the other hand, killing your own "good" bacteria does seem like a viable problem to me. I agree with Kolar that the danger lies not in a direct decrease of immune system, yet more in an indirect decrease caused by the death of your own useful bacteria.

How could it not, if you took antibiotics every day of your life for 30 years, and then stopped taking them, do you honestly think your body would know how to fight off an infection.

Your body only creates the chemicals and cells that it needs to create, when you add an artificial chemical to your body to do something for you, your body stops needing to do it and stops creating it.

Do you really need a scientific report to understand this?

Oh and before you say "well if you take anything for 30 years blah blah blah"

Think about all the antibiotics your eating and drinking on a daily basis when you eat steak or drink milk that has been treated with antibiotics or for that matter growth hormones.

Which is why besides never taking any drug besides an aspirin now and again I also only eat meat and drink milk that hasn't been treated with antibiotics or growth hormones.

Yes but that is a result of the the depletion of friendly bacteria. That reaction causes an illness which taxes your immune system, it doesn't itself suppress the immune system but only weakens it so overall you could be more susceptible to infection. And that is based on cases where a person is on pro-longed use of heavy antibiotics, not your average person who mistakenly treats their seasonal cold/flu with antibiotics. The case Wark was making is that because antibiotics do all the work (which isn't true) the immune system is weakened, and I can't find anything to support that view. Unless you are talking about an underdeveloped immune systems.

Yes, I honestly believe my body would know how to fight off an infection even after thirty years of antibiotics (if I had still been alive after those thirty years, which is definetely not the case, for reasons stated in the post above.)

Also, the fact that your body stops synthesising hormones when you start taking artifical ones doesn't mean your immune system will drop when you take anti-biotics. Besides, whether you take anti-biotics or not, your body fights off bacteria every minute of the day. Even when you take anti-biotics you can get sick, and even when you don't take anti-biotics you can stay perfectly healthy.

I can hardly believe you don't take in any growth hormones or "artificial spores" for the simple reason that you would die. There are growth hormones in every piece of meat you eat, be it artificial or natural.

Having said that I agree with you on not taking any drugs except an occasional aspirin and if necessary, a short period of anti-biotics. Odds of getting a serious bacterial or viral infection are very, very slim. Aspirin on the other hand can be a very dangerous and vile substance, which would probably kill you well before any flu gets the chance to.

Also note: if you think our bodies don't need anything other than it's immune system you have been proven wrong many times in the history of mankind. Just an example: the plague used to kill millions of people all over the world, who could be saved only by use of anti-biotics. Had there been none anti-biotics we would probably still suffer from this terrible epidemy. Yet we managed to suppress it (by anti-biotics of course).

Okay, practicing basic hygiene is one thing we can all agree on im not saying take a shit and dont wash your hands. I'm saying newer things that have become popular like using your shirt or a towel to grab door handles, and overusing the hand disinfectants takes its toll on your immune system. If you're constantly killing all the bacteria on your hands that is beneficial to you when you come in contact with the flu you'll have one less natural defense against it. It really is a matter of common sense here. Again im not saying not to use the stuff, but a lot of people I see use that all the damn time and its not healthy for them despite the fact that their hands are clean for a moment.

This. Consider your immune system the soldiers in a war, whereas the anti-biotics are the support artillery. With anti-biotics the war might be over far sooner than expected. However, without anti-biotics the war will be won eventually. This shows you that your body works hard no matter how much anti-biotics you feed it.

It's not right to compare hormone systems to immune systems because they are completely different systems with completely different functions and evolutionary history.

How is exposing yourself to germs on surfaces going to help your immune system? I agree people tend to overdo it and we can deal with the a lot of things we are exposed to without running for the antibacterial dispenser every 3 minutes. I just don't see how that exposure benefits you.

                        whats there to not understand?

Your body fights off germs, and is used to those germs for a while after being exposed to them. Thats how a flu shot works anyway. If you dont allow your body to have that contact then it wont be prepared when it actually gets infected

i just think you're getting confused with my standpoint anyway im not saying to go roll around in pig shit to get exposed to things but i see some fairly extreme measures to avoid contact with germs and i think all that does is weaken your immune system

go expose yourself to smallpox or measles and "get over" it
