Your build was already really solid.

    Case:
    Antec 300
    $55

    Power Supply:
    Corsair CMPSU-750TX
    $95 = $110 - $5 combo discount - $10 rebate

    Motherboard:
ASRock X58 LGA 1366 ATX Motherboard
    $155 = $160 - $5 combo discount

    Processor:
    Intel Core i7-920
    $283 = $289 - $6 combo discount

    Memory:
    OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) OCZ3G1600LV6GK
    $114 = $150 - $6 combo discount - $30 rebate

    Hard Drive:
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA ST31000528AS
    $80 = $95 -$15 rebate

    Optical Drive:
Samsung SH-S223C 22x SATA DVD Burner
    $22 = $37 - $15 rebate

    Graphics Card:
    HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    $153 = $163 - $10 promo code VGA1214

    Monitor:
    Samsung T240HD 24" 1920x1200 HDTV
    $250

Okay, I lied. This is $1312 shipped after tax/rebates and it's exactly the same components.

I built a computer on the opposite end of the spectrum a couple months ago. I don't game. From SSForum:
Just built it a few days ago. This is huge for me, because up until now I've been using an old AMD Athlon 64 4000+ laptop that ran at 70 degC constant. First time I built a completely new computer without using any old parts, so I had to share.

Total cost shipped was $399.19 after tax, cashback, and rebates. It's pretty zippy by my standards. I'm running triple 21.5" 1080p monitors on it.

They'll pretty much all the same design anyway. I think there was a combo deal with the processor/memory/Sapphire video card that puts the total price at a few bucks more.

I highly recommend having two HDDs of the same type and size together and set up raid.

              ssd > raid

but yeah, raid setups are pretty slick

i'll probably end up going raid because i don't have the patience to save up for an ssd

The 24" is for trance, and it's actually a decent deal for an HDTV monitor. I have 21.5" monitors.

I'm thinking about doing this with my PC, 2x of this 500 GB drive (I already have one). Is it possible to move to a two-drive RAID array without formatting the drives? I'm guessing mirrored-yes, striped-no?

yea, getting 2 (or 3 :P) monitors would have been an amazing experience. unfortunately, that is just out of my budget right now. maybe in a couple-few years. for now a 24" with 1920x1200 will be good enough.

...damn it should would be sick to have triple display that comes built with no borders etc..want one so bad..anyway, just so everyone can continue to see what i am getting:

                  -SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner

-Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

                  -Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

                  -SAMSUNG T240HD Rose-Black 24" 5ms HDMI Widescreen HDTV Monitor

                  -SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100283VXL Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

                  -CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W (power supply)

i'll be rockin' an old 17" dell lcd with my new build. it only does 1280x1024. it'd be sick to have a triple display setup running off the 5770 via eyefinity.

instead of a multi-display setup though, i'm planning on saving up for an lcd hdtv and using that as my primary display. this build is going to pull double duty as my main desktop machine as well as an htpc.

SSD = Solid State Drive, basically like a thumb drive or SD card, only faster, bigger, and inside your computer.

RAID = Redundant Array of Independent Disks, a way to combine two or more physical drives into one logical drive (that is some combination of faster, larger, or safer).

RAID sucks ass, a waste of time and money. Save a few dollars in the box and spend it on a nice monitor, keyboard and mouse. The input/output is what dictates the user's experience much more than a faction of a second quicker horsepower.
