If you want to talk like that, be a real "patriot" and recognize that they have every right to feel the way they want. Did they physically remove the t shirts from those kids? No. They complained. They felt offended, and I can honestly see why. You sound so closed-minded and ignorant with what you just said there.
Why did they complain? Let's see..Do you realize that many "Mexicans" in California are native to that land? Well, a lot of them are. So yes, it is highly offensive to wear those flags in front of the community which is trying to celebrate a holiday on one day of the year. By the way, I am not necessarily agreeing with making the kids take their shirts off or turn them inside-out; but once again, I sure as hell understand where the complaining party is coming from. If you want to know, though, I do not think the kids should have had to do anything with their shirts. If they want to wear it, let them wear it. However, don't complain if let's say...some Muslim citizen wants to wear their countries flag on Independence Day. Oh, you don't like that though right? (No I'm not Muslim/My family is not Muslim/I was not raised Muslim/any other Muslim related connection--I am just making a point.)
This is the same concept as Columbus Day, man. Why do we celebrate it like it's such a glorious event? It's nothing to celebrate. That is a huge slap in the face of anyone native to the "America's." It is a day to recognize the raping, murder, looting, and extermination of entire communities and cultures, if anything at all.
I know this is an odd way to put it, but it is very similar...If someone came to your apartment or home and stole it, but then allowed you to have one room, wouldn't you still be pissed? What if you both have a flag that represents each of you, and you had a holiday recognizing something to do with events dealing with the apartment/home (land) being stolen or something similar; and that other person comes in and crashes the celebration by waving his flag around. Wouldn't you be upset at that person for waving that flag around? Wouldn't you think it is horrible if that person says "Uh, excuse me? Who's house are you in?"
Look, I'll just say it like this: It was offensive to see those American flag t-shirts etc on Cinco de Mayo because it is recognizing a victory that they had in a battle over their land. If their land used to be California, and now it's not because it was basically stolen, the last thing that is appropriate to put in their face is an American flag, a symbol of the people that took that land (even if Cinco de Mayo is recognizing a battle vs. the French, it's still a slap in the face. I don't know how you don't see that).
It seems like you are just not properly putting yourself in their place.
I'm not sure if this came out exactly how I wanted, but I hope some of you get what I am saying. I disagree with making anyone change their clothing or anything like that. However, to say, "Excuse me, what country are you in?" is absolutely ridiculous. We are all on someone's land. That is a fact. You can't just say those type of statements and refuse to recognize history. History is not an isolated event, and when it comes down to it, almost all of the land U.S. citizens take up was stolen from other people. As a result, there is tension. That tension does not just die down because time is going by. It in fact gets carried a little bit from generation to generation, and I don't see how you can blame anyone that is native to the land that was stolen. How can you not see that anyone native to this land (U.S.) has every right to be pissed off if they see an American flag? Doesn't it actually make total sense (especially on a holiday that represents their community)?
PS: Anyone that is about to tell me to "leave the country if I feel this way," save your energy. I recognize my right to say what I want and express my opinions, and that is why I am using that right. Oh, and get over that part now, too, because there are plenty of other countries which allow free speech and expression as well.

CA total population = 36,961,664
CA 'native' opulation = 700,000
So about 2% of the total CA population can be considered 'native'.

Lmao at Trancetunes, are you kidding me right now? It is offensive to represent the country that they live in now because a country they have no affiliation with beat another country that they have no affiliation with in a battle that when you get down to it was not wildly significant to their independence? In that case, I am extremely offended whenever Mexican colors are present in Mexico on days when we've won battles, any battle. Even if it was a Civil War battle, I can't believe how offensive it is that Mexicans in Mexico would dare wear their colors on one of our days! The nerve of them....
Seriously? Grow up, that's what it all boils down to.JAMAL> didn't think there was a worse shark than midoent but the_paul takes it
