like it or not, we do live in america. we do participate in the various webs of networks of people that constitute this geographic location. and of course, individuals being individuals, there are many reasons for people to feel proud of their country. i probably would have made a thread had d1s not made it. july 4th is more (or less) than just some affirmation of the state, it depends on how or why you observe it. and that is why d1s likened you to hitler. because you took whatever reasons, however valid they were, that d1s had in making this thread and sort of pushed that aside for whatever thing you envisioned in your mind to hate.

Being proud to be American is like a tall guy being proud of his height. He didn't work for it.

In other words, being born on these lands is nothing to be proud of because you didn't accomplish a damn thing. If you were born in another country and went through their public school indoctrination process, you'd be prone to their nationalism.

If an immigrant boast such claims, then his/her pride has to do with the adversity he/she overcame to move to another country. It has nothing to do with the country he/she decided to move to. In other words, a person can move to any country in the world and still experience the same pride. So, specific geographical location has nothing to do with one's pride. So, being proud of your specific geographical location is just nonsense.

People are just going through the motions like a mouse that gets excited when the bell rings because it means food.

4th of July relates to beautiful women in bikinis, BBQ, fireworks, and alcohol (even on Sunday) -- which are all fun to be around and experience. But, it's not limited to America.

I mean, are you saying you're proud that you can gorge yourself with hotdogs and alcohol? Because, needless to say, taking pleasure in food and getting drunk is something everyone can experience anywhere in the world. You don't go and say, "I'm proud to be at this baseball game because I can get hotdogs and beer." Or, "I'm proud to be an Astros fan because I get hotdogs and beer."


Bottom line here, being American doesn't grant you special abilities that allows you to experience women, booze, bbq, and fireworks.

So, why is that association constantly being made here as if it's limited to this country alone? And why is everyone getting all pissed off because I'm objectively questioning you for making such associations?

(And before anyone says something, don't be so daft to think I'm questioning why you like women.)

It's not as if you go to another country and wave that particular nation's flag that women, booze, bbq, and fireworks all of a sudden becomes unavailable to you. Such things are available in every country, even 3rd world countries. There might be an issue of convenience, but not when you compare like to like.

Arizona Sen. John McCain is the latest Republican to criticize National Republican Committee Chairman Michael Steele's comments about President Barack Obama and the war in Afghanistan.

Steele says that the conflict is not winnable and a war of Obama’s choosing; but the New York Times reported he “misstated the history of the conflict, which President George W. Bush started nine years ago in response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.”

Odd that this idiot Michael Steele was in favor of the war only 3 years ago? Was even quoted saying that "Afghanistan is the battle to end terrorism and an effort to eliminate the Taliban and Al Qaeda", as he lambasted the Dem's for wanting to pull out and set a deadline. Does this guy really represent the GOP?

Senator Lindsey Graham did make a nice comment though:

"the good news is Michael Steele is backtracking so fast he's going to be in Kabul fighting here pretty soon."
