DETROIT, MI (KTRK) -- Houston is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation due in no small part to how well we've fared in the recession. And many new residents arrive with something very valuable: a college education.

More: Got a story idea? Let us know!
Eyewitness News went to one of the cities hit hardest by the recession to find out why those college educated are leaving and why it's both good and bad for Houston.

"I'm a new Texan," Kenneth Miller said.

Miller arrived in Houston four months ago with his dog Aladdin, a few belongings and a lot of hope.

"I was in pursuit of a better job, better opportunities, new experiences," he said. "I was ready for something new."

What he left behind was Michigan, a state big in natural beauty, but because of the hits to the auto industry, not so big in job opportunities, even for those with a college education.

John Gallagher has covered the economic and urban development beat for the Detroit Free Press since 1987.

"Michigan never really came out of the 2001 recession," he said.

Gallagher's also the author of a new book "Reimagining Detroit," in which he says a smaller Detroit might be a better Detroit.

"In the last 10 years we've probably lost on a base of 4.5 to 5 million workers in the state, we've lost about 800,000 jobs," Gallagher said.

A year ago, Michigan's unemployment rate was 15.3 percent; Detroit's was 30 percent. The lack of jobs prompted an exodus, people leaving abandoned buildings and urban decay in their wake.

"We're losing two kinds of people -- the former auto workers, the factory workers who lost their jobs and had to go somewhere else, and then the young college grads," Gallagher said.

The exodus even has a name there. They call it "Michigration" and Harris County, Texas, is among the top 10 destinations for people leaving Michigan's most populated counties.

Harris County has grown 19.7 percent since 2000, and 39 percent of those leaving Michigan have a college education. Meanwhile, 28 percent of Houston residents have a bachelor's degree. Nineteen percent have some college.

"I think that I have a lot to contribute to Houston," Miller said.

Miller's education at Lansing Community College cost Houston taxpayers nothing, but it's a bargain of sorts, according to Rice University demographer Stephen Klineberg.

"If there was no immigration, we would be forced much more quickly to provide the skills here," Klineberg said.

And more people are coming to Texas, like 23-year-old Amber Strachan. We met her near her home in East Lansing, Michigan. She's got a couple of years of college under her belt. She says she applied for at least 30 jobs and can't find work in Michigan -- and she's looking to be in Houston by the end of the year.

"They told me not only is kind of it easier to get jobs for what I'm looking for, but the housing's cheaper," Miller said.

              It's a double-edged sword, says Klineberg.

"It's a whole lot easier to bring 'em in here than to train them ourselves, but in the long run, of course, that's the stupidest thing you could do, given the realities of a growing underclass," he said.

But in Miller's view, there is no downside to his move to Houston.

"I had a great job that LCC helped prepare me for, but it wasn't enough," Miller said. "I was ready for more."

              More Houston, less Detroit.

didn't mean to turn this thread into a finland > us because we will never come to an agreement there. no. i was trying to find some people who would comment on the fact that Putin called you a bunch of hypocrites (which you are).

I concur, I have been gone from Trench Wars for almost a year now to finish my education and find myself a secure job. I found employment within the state of Texas and have recently purchased a home. I am quite content with my current surroundings and the level of success I have been able to attain in these twelve short months since I last left this community.

My story is much like Money's; I use to live on the outskirts of Toronto and he lived in Michigan, it's literally a couple hours drive between the Windsor tunnel that separates our two peoples. We're very similar, we play hockey, talk about socialist thought, and endure cold weather. We also build cars, and apparently suck at it. Opportunity never really existed here, both places were lifeless, weak, and frail. Most of us in Canada live off the social assistance the government gave us, but there never was any 'real' jobs here.

I hopped on a Grey Hound with my girlfriend and headed south, we stopped in Michiagna and saw the crack babies and black folk clinging to street corners like a gambler who receives his monthly government support. I felt uncomfortable here, it was like Ontario but worse. Houses were being sold for ten to twenty thousand, at least back home the housing market was staying solid through all of this fucking shit. These people weren't educated, they were factory workers with no education or other industry to lean on. I was saddened by this hole, so we left as quick as we came. We stopped by Ohio, another worthless has been state that had no industries or people of interest. I found the same sad stories, and crappy real estate market that made me question who if anyone would actually purchase a home here. Granted some of these homes were beautiful, some of which would fetch three to four hundred thousand in Toronto were being sold for twenty to thirty thousand. The only real thing stopping people from living here was the lack of economic freedom or the ability to find sustainable income.

Arizona was nice, lots of illegals though. The Canadians down there have inter mixed quite well with the Americans, I think the people who live there realized why hate another white face when it's actually those brown fuckers who keep taking all the work. I was saddened by this left leaning state to actually assert its dominance and take control of the problems within the state. Still it wasn't as bad as Detroit or Buffalo, what a bunch of fucking holes those were. Cleveland was also a place I would never recommend anyone ever going to.

I left once again, and ended up in Texas. I had heard of big things and big egos here, still I thought it was warm enough and had some sort of job opportunities so I gave it a shot. I found work within the first ten minutes of arriving, once I realized how easy it was to prosper here I made plans to make this a temporary stay and find out if I would like it. After a couple months I bought a truck, a black ford f-150 that would get me to and from work. I love my new truck, it's filled me with a source of pride and accomplishment. I recently had a baby on American soil, I plan on raising the child with American ideals and teaching the child about small government and conservatism. I am hoping that one day when the child is older he will play football, he will be encouraged into it from an early age and hopefully get a scholarship to a good school. I hope he can be happy playing football and driving a big truck like me, one day i hope he meets a nice white girl to make more beautiful blue eyed babies with.

The American dream is attainable, I found it.
it makes me sick when i think of it, all my heroes could not live with it so i hope you rest in peace cause with us you never did
