  • me invading new york this summer

so, yours truly and my other half (don't worry, she smokes weed) are invading new york this summer. 11.6 - 18.6.2011

what do we absolutely need to see? any insider tips on what we should do? it's just one week in NY and so much to see. What should we definitely avoid? Help a fellow europeon brotha out.

also, who is up for a beer - and who will bring the weed?

    ps. we're staying in harlem

One thing I remember enjoying was a stroll through central park.

On the flip side, I would recommend against the street meat.

the grass in central park is not as lush as it looks on tv.

if you're into chess visit the chess and checkers club in central park though.

i would counter soup du jour's post and say try one of the arab street vendor's lamb gyro. they are bomb.

Actually there's a lot of cool/nice places in the Bronx, just not southside. You should visit Yankee stadium and the Bronx Zoo. Maybe take a walk through Van Cortland Park (edit: also has some of the most exclusive outdoor spots in the city if you're looking to toke up) and watch a game of cricket or baseball. If you don't make it down to Queens you can go to Riverdale and visit a Jewish deli for some quality New York cuts of meat.

Harlem has also cleaned up a lot and a few of the areas have turned out nicely. Check out the Apollo theater there, Mount Vernon and Sylvia's Restaurant.

Other than the normal tourist attractions in Manhattan, a cool photo op can be found at the Five Points in Manhattan or Five Pointz in Queens (buildings absolutely covered in colorful graffiti).

Really NYC is a cool experience in general, and I miss it a lot. You will definitely feel like you've missed a lot in just a week's vacation because people can live their whole lives there and not see everything there is to see. The good news for foreigners is that it's a lot safer, cleaner, and friendlier to tour around.

Don't spend more than one day in the Plaza District (Times Square/Columbus Circle), because you'll miss so much of the city that never sleeps. Make sure you do a little research on what restaurants, delis, pizzerias etc you want to go to throughout the week, don't end up somewhere like Olive Garden in Times Square because you couldn't figure out a place to eat. Get familiar with the subway map and know how to get from place to place on it before you go out that day. Cab rides are expensive and walking more than 5 blocks is tedious. Going to a Broadway play or musical is 50/50. You'll probably spend most of the day revolved around it, but it's a spectacular experience no matter how straight you are.

Don't recommend visiting trancetunes, I am pretty sure this guy is the next Buffalo Bill judging on his erratic behavior when he was dealing with his spaceship breakup.

If you want to go to a place with some good music, go to Rockwood Music Hall

                      http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com/

They have two bars where live music is played about every night and they have a lot of good bands, from what I could judge this past week. It's on Allen st. between Houston and Stanton st. Take the subway to Bleecker station and it's only a short walk.

I would definitely recommend walking across the Brooklyn bridge and along the brooklyn boulevard when it's dark, pretty awesome views on lower Manhattan. Top of the Rock (Rockefeller centre) offers better views than the Empire State building in my opinion.

Central Park is worth a visit and a Broadway show is definitely fun!

True true ... although it was pretty nice and lush over by the MET last time i was there -- I was a little drunk and took a nap there after crushinating a hot dog while my two friends I was with were bitching at each other about what museum to go to next.

We ended up continuing our bar crawl rather than go in another museum ... Still mad about the $15 vodka tonics in Greenwich Village and this was 6 years ago.
                            Fuck it.

NCY is amazing for Jazz. Hit up the Vanguard, Blue Note, Irridium, Small Jazz Club.....so many venues.

Shame your restricting yourself to NYC, as the State of NY itself is amazing in the spring/summer. Lake Placid, Lake George, all the fingerlakes...nice areas.

Xog knows the city damn well. You may want to look into what week you are coming into the city and see if there are any festivals or attractions specific to your visit.

If you happen to take a day train ride down to Philly....1.5 hr train ride, let me know...will be able to smoke n/p.

Good luck and have fun in whatever you decide on doing.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.
