A lot of people contemplate whether they want to be buried or cremated.. I want to be cremated, then have a tree grow from my ashes!

Hmm, or a pot plant. According to one comment from the article, and my small amount of knowledge of growing, it's possible I could provide some good yields:
This is my first post, just FYI. Anyway, I just graduated with a BS in biochemistry and I believe I can roughly give you the composition of human ashes. Here is the elemental composition of a living human by percent:
H-63
O-25.5
C-9.5
N-1.4
Ca-0.31
P-0.22
Cl-0.08
K-0.06
S-0.05
Na-0.03
Mg-0.01
Trace elements include Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Mo, I, Ni and Se
During the combustion process of cremation, most of the H and O will be released as water vapor and C and O will also be released in the form of CO2. So my best guess without doing any research is that the ash will be high in N and moderate in P and K with a good supply of micronutes and trace nutes. This is just a guess – the heat of the combustion reaction could provide energy to create some crazy organic reactions, which could create variances in the levels of nutrients that would be useable by a plant. Let me exhaust some resources and maybe I can give you a definitive answer.
Peace, love and sooooooooul

Bernd Heinrich, one of America's great field biologists, talks with NPR's Robert Krulwich about what to do with our bodies after we're dead. Is it better to be buried, "beetlized," or frozen solid and shattered into a million pieces?
William D. Hamilton, perhaps one of the greatest biologists in the 20th century, famously wrote an open letter saying that when he died he wanted to be laid out on the forest floor in the Amazon jungle.
He said he hoped to be buried by burial beetlesgo NPRHamilton did not get his wish. His partner buried him in Britain in a patch of forest called the Wytham Woods. And Heinrich's student — who is still very much alive — was told that his wish was a touch impractical and quite possibly illegal.4:BigKing> xD

I never understood the significance people place on the physical remains of the deceased, in fact I find it a little creepy.
It's like a crazed side effect of people's emotionally sensitive state whilst losing a loved one. They dress up the remains, put make up on it, parade it around, talk to it, then either bury it or burn it and extend the craziness to spreading ashes under trees, in the sea, keeping them on display in their home, etc.
When I die I want to be fed to my dogs.sigpic

I guess the first thing they'll do when I die is strip my body of every last useful bit that's on it, be it for transplants or for research. After that I don't think there's enough left to parade around so I guess they'll just burn the rest up and uh... whatever? Dead anyway."People fear what they can't understand, hate what they can't conquer."
