I like how in actuarial science, your pay is more or less directly determined by the number of those tests that you take. Pretty good job though if you're into doing math all day.

Yes and no. At the company I work at, you get an automatic raise (and a substantial bonus if you pass on your first try) for each exam you pass. Of course, they also pay for about 150 hours of study time. But, my company is moving away from having promotions and pay raises based solely on exam process - we undergo a review twice a year for performance based raises and bonuses. Either way though, passing all of the exams pretty much means you're automatically making six figures and managing people.

Also, we don't really do math all day. The first few exams are very focused on math. The last few involve reading books and doing a lot more of analytical work - which is what I do at work all day. Sure, I've done some things with time value of money, confidence intervals, summations, etc - but usually I'm just analyzing data with simple additions, subtractions, and percent changes.

For some reason I thought all you guys did was calculate how likely it was for X and Y to happen and calculate proper insurance rates from statistics. That's the impression I got from my two high school classmates that went into the field.

For the exams? Yes. It proves that you understand the concept behind the mathematics and can calculate it based on simple assumptions. In the real world, when you have $42 billion of in-force policies and you need to know how many policy holders will be dying in the coming quarter you rely on a computer to do the work for you. It's all loaded into computer modeling software with data that you input (including assumptions like mortality, which you make based on past data that you analyze - not calculate). It then takes a few hours to run everything, you get the data, and do more analysis.

Are you pricing a new product instead? Great. You upload assumptions, it calculates how it will perform, you analyze the data, decide if it's good or not, and adjust your assumptions to affect the results in a way you like.

Like I said, very little math, very heavy analysis (and this analysis tends to get me kicked out of mafia games for over-analyzing things).
