Having come from a family where if you were disobedient you got the belt or random object I can still defend this poor girl, My father/mother never beat me out of anger. Even though I got spanked with something It was more the fact that I was going to have to get a spanking at some point in the day for my actions "mind fuck" if you will. That right there is abuse. and for fuck sake she's 16? I stopped getting spanked at like 10 years old. This guy is ruining it for the rest of us parents who discipline our kids the right way. But seriously I bet she wont download any mother fucking computer games. American needs to spank their kids more damn we got some disobedient MFKeRS..(jErOmE)>city i live in is 54% black 41% white, ive seen so much weird blackness

I guess you guys are right after all, we should all be using violence to instill fear into our children so they do exactly what we want.
I wonder what word would fit that description in your average dictionary..."People fear what they can't understand, hate what they can't conquer."

So do you believe any physical discipline is inappropriate?Originally posted by RednaZ View Postwe should all be using violence to instill fear into our children so they do exactly what we want.
Personally I think children under a certain age lack the cognitive abilities and cant be "reasoned" with. According to 'Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development' before a child reaches the age of around 10 their conscious is dominated by egocentric and nonreversible thought patterns.
To put it simplistically, it's like trying to reason with your pet dog. They will pretty much only understand physical pain, albeit symbolic pain like a slap on the hand or snout.
It's also pretty clear to observe the differences in practical terms. I have family who dont believe in physical discipline of their kids, and others who do. The differences in the behavior of their children is remarkable.
I have also witnessed parents who pride themselves on how "out of control" their kids are.. As if they think this is instilling confidence in them. In reality they are creating egocentric monsters.sigpic

My wife and I could never resolve this issue, so we ended up not having any kids. ‘Spanking’ has been studied and researched a lot. The research overwhelming shows the same results, the only positive outcome is immediate compliance, negative outcomes include higher rates of aggression, higher rates of delinquency and higher rates of mental health issues. Even scarier, the likelihood of hitting your own children if you were hit as a child is north of 98%. So many feel that spanking is the ‘quick and easy’ form of parenting but I fail to see how emotional/mental pressure is any better or worse form of corrective action.Originally posted by TagMor View PostSo do you believe any physical discipline is inappropriate?

Given this, the wife and I agreed to stop the perpetuation of the generational misery with us and not have any kids. Or was it because we were selfish and wanted to keep all of our money and freee time? Shit, can’t remember, 40 years of drug abuse has clouded my memory.

No I don't. In fact I agree with you about 99%. There is however a major difference between "symbolic pain like a slap on the hand or snout" and violence, violence has nothing to do with discipline. I am however strictly against physical discipline after children reach the age where they are receptive to reasoning and logic.Originally posted by TagMor View PostSo do you believe any physical discipline is inappropriate?

My father was very strict when I was young, and he did use light forms of physical discipline until a certain age. I was never afraid of my father though, I listened to him because I trusted and respected him."People fear what they can't understand, hate what they can't conquer."

In my opinion physical discipline is unnecessary and inhuman (or at least I'd want it to be inhuman). I think when you have to resort to something like that you've made a mistake earlier and to regain control you try to resort to violence. My parents always tried to explain things from many perspectives ("how do you think your brother feels when you hit him?" etc.), and I think it encourages empathy instead of the thought that violence solves all life's issues. Of course they were angry at times, but they never hit my siblings or me. I was an easy teenager growing up though, since I played continuum through my teenage years. I think young children "not being able to understand reason" is bullshit. Even if you can't logic your way out of everything with a 5-year-old you can have penalizations that are not physical.
As for the video, I think that isn't disciplining. It's just a sick man enjoying the physical abuse of somebody he knows won't be able to fight back. He has an obsession to be in control and when his daughter or wife do something that weakens his control he regains it like this.6:megaman89> im 3 league veteran back off

I got the belt a few times, nothing like what she got. It wasn't the actual physical pain that did it, it was the whole ordeal. I think it was more the psychological effect it had, the main thing was that it was immediate. I think it'd be more effective to shove a kid in a closet for 15-20 minutes. I had that happen, always my least favorite punishment as a child. But I'm also a fan of rewarding positive behavior. Give the kid something he wants when he does something good, and give him a "are you retarded?" look when he does something bad. Also worked well for me.
