lol...theres a huge difference between a site speaking out about the US government and a site hosting illegal content. Since this is made solely to target sites outside the US, how does it matter to you? We could make the server and host it in country if it truly didnt have illegal content

ty the video did help me understand it well

Noone bitched when the government passed a law saying they can turn off the internet in a "national emergency" a couple years ago so now the dicks think they can pull this shit on us. Glad to see the uprising, although it should have happened back then.
              Fuck it.

Gateway laws hahahahahahaha. How do you draw the line from shutting down piracy which is illegal to censorship of your right to free speech? What's the next logical step?

Unless I'm mistaken, the language that was used in the bills was vague enough that if the government so chose, they could start shutting down sites that in any way used film clips from motion pictures or snippets from songs without permission. There are a couple of examples that come to mind:

thatguywiththeglasses.com has a "Nostalgia Critic" review section in which he does half-serious reviews of corny movies from the 80s and 90s that are supposed to just be for fun. His entire site could get shut down if these bills are passed, even though he's doing nothing of consequence.

Another instance might be Justin Bieber. I don't dig the kid's music or anything, but he got his start in music by doing cover versions of songs by other artists on Youtube. These kind of laws would make it much harder for anyone to do something similar, even if all they did, if anything, was draw more attention to the creators of the original songs.

This whole bill reeks of the MPAA/RIAA desperately trying to stop the changes that have been taking place for years in the way in which people access content. The internet should remain the way it is, IMO.

But it COULD target sites in the US, not just looking for outside sites. Even if the sites are hosted in the country, basically any website that is social or has a community could be targeted as potential websites that harbour infringing material. That makes sites that "truly didnt have illegal content" a target. You could say that YouTube, which is housed in the US, contains many videos that are truly original and does not infringe on copywrite. The Terms of Service also explicitly states that infringing material can and will be subject to deletion/removal from the website. What SOPA enables people to do is shut down the ENTIRE website, because of a few people who chose to ignore the Terms of Service that YouTube created, in order to put a song on their video to accompany their rant or vlog, or their video of their cat.

YouTube in of itself is a website that does not support the use of illegal content. But because of the actions of the community, could be shut down because of the content they provide.

Another situation that is happening right now is the shutting down of Megaupload by the US government. The same situation arrises. It is a filesharing website that is supposed to help people share their own user-generated content. Megaupload also tries to enforce Anti-piracy by actively removing illegal content. But because some content does not get deleted immediately, Megaupload appears to some as a website that does nothing but illegal content, and is being shut down, even though it states in their Terms-of-Service that such content is not allowed and will be subject to removal. What happens to the other users who use the site for perfectly legal means? Why do they get punished for something that they could not have controlled?

Ok common sense time. The us government already CAN shut down youtube if it wanted since its based in the us. Why not? Cause it makes no sense to. The government isnt some evil juggernaut out to ruin your lives. What would they gain by doing it? Nothing at all. Stop crying that someone is trying to shut down your illegal torrenting and accept the fact you're going to have to get a job and buy stuff

Are you suggesting the Federal Government has the constitutional right to shut down any business or organization for any reason they see fit, purely due to them being located in the United States...?

ITT Izor uses facts with no substantial proof of their validity, makes a comment about how only poor people steal things, and is generally wrong about everything in general.
