How can I not draw a parallel?!

    Seriously!?

Patriot Act - catch terrorists - take away civil liberties by monitoring, surveillance, wire-tapping, invading personal privacy of Americans to ensure that we can find and capture wrong-doers!

SOPA - catch online pirates - take away civil liberties on the internet by monitoring, surveillance, regulation of any and all websites that we visit on the internet to ensure that we can find and capture wrong-doers!

not that hard to draw a parallel.

So youtube is stealing Lil Wayne's song then isn't he?

Shouldn't youtube be banned and dismantled for their heinous crimes?

        While we're are at it;

let's ban and dismantle Google because they provide links to websites that offer you free songs, they also have Google Video that does the same thing as youtube!

How many times can you have this discussion honestly...it boils down to people coming on the internet and thinking theyre above laws. Do you think child porn should legal on the internet too? It's 'free speech' right? Cue the 'comparing child porn to downloading music' arguments. But it's basically what you're saying. You can come online and do w/e you want with no consequences for your actions

But there are already consequences for downloading child porn on your computer

people are arrested for it, lose their jobs, and have their lives ruined for it (which it should)

so we already have laws in place to catch people for crimes they commit on the internet?

Then what's the importance of this SOPA thing then?

            TO MAKE MORE FUCKING MONEY

What civil liberties are being taken away with SOPA genius? You normally have the liberty to go in to music stores and take the CD's that you like without paying for them?

The civil liberties I'm discussing is not from downloading music illegally, it's our freedom to browse the internet for whatever information we like to because that's what the internet does (it shares information). But if we have Big Brother watching now, and regulating everything that requires permission to, then our FREE INTERNET will become a place where we have to pay to use Google, pay to use Youtube, pay to use Yahoo!, pay to use reddit, pay to use Wikipedia, pay to use ANYTHING!!!!!!!! Because it's designed to fuck with companies that offer us free services on the INTERNET!!!!

Oh wait, also... let's not forget the impact it can have on our new social media shit! Facebook, Myspace, Twitter... Not mentioning that we will have to probably pay to use those services, but also watch what you fucking say. It was enough already that you could get fired for saying something bad about your job, but now watch out for saying something bad about your government.

Think about how Egypt, and other countries got around to having successful revolutions. They used the advent of the internet to get their message across and organize protest rallies. America thrives on its people to stand up for what it believes in, and thanks to the internet, we can spread word about wrong-doing much faster and organize peaceful protests that grow in numbers because of the INTERNET. If the government had power to CONTROL the INTERNET, then they can in essence CONTROL YOU. They're already doing it, they know everything about you (from meals you eat, to the medicine you purchase, to your likes and disinterests in pop culture). What's stopping them from getting away with too much power?

Us, the people. We need the internet free in order to protect our own freedom from future discretion. If you can't understand that, then you deserve to be controlled you fucking tool.

i haven't seen gran guerrero this passionate since.......our last legalization thread!

no but seriously, hollywood lobbyists are clearly flexing the muscles of their masters through the senators pushing this through. Patriot act has obviously parallels in limiting freedoms. I vaguely remember the clamor during the patriot act, but those freedoms were more ambiguous in a way. More people are fighting now because things like youtube, reddit, etc. would probably collapse.

Plus the only people using the internet in 2001 were gamers and people using "electronic mail", tougher to mobilize everyone who cared about the patriot act.

edit: great onion article slightly related to the type of lobbyists mentioned: http://www.theonion.com/articles/rov...-shadows,2355/

I also like how you think everything you say is correct and that no one can challenge you on the subject,

even though you didn't know what the fuck this was before the thread was posted

also where are your usual quicksand cronies to back you up?

I doubt even Kthx agrees this thing should be passed

All your arguments fail after this point, because

It didn't pass for the exact reasons why over 30 million Americans thought of why it shouldn't pass.

You are right actually, I don't agree with him on this matter. I told him that SOPA/Protect IP aren't the answer to the problem and that it isn't really meant to stop piracy as much as it is meant to add another nail to the coffin of personal freedom. The bills were so ambiguously written that even though some good might have come from them in regards to stopping people from downloading games/movies/music for free although I really doubt it would have helped, there was also plenty of room in the bills to make them able to shut down websites for bullshit reasons that questioned the government or might help spread the idea of an open rebellion.

I talked about this with him yesterday but he used to walking into the store and stealing analogy. I said that these gaming, movie, and music producers need to get with the times and understand how useful tools such as torrent sites can be to spread their games around. Maybe gaming companies need to stop fucking the consumer and charging 60 dollars for shitty games and adding another 20 dollars worth of game that you have to download that should have been included with the regular game. Just like Napster/Kazaa etc were instrumental in the price of CD's dropping from 20 dollars to 10 dollars, torrenting sites will be instrumental in the lowering of extremely overpriced games and dvd to a more reasonable level. Obviously you agree that games are overpriced since you illegally downloaded skyrim right?

And now some companies instead of fighting against all of this are basically openly accepting it, look at civilization who made their game open source so the community could make mods easily for it which made the game have more replayability while saving themselves a ton of money, look at minecraft who openly supports the piracy of its game because it believes that enough people will enjoy their game so much that they will eventually pay for it. Maybe if these ridiculously large companies would get with the times instead of using a 30 year old business model on how things should work they too could promote their games better through the utilization of gaming communities.

Trust me, there is a reason why all these bands and musicians aren't working with record labels anymore, and soon small groups of gaming programmers will realize they don't need to work for some huge studio that is financially bloated in order to make a game and market it, it won't stifle the creativity of newer games it will encourage more people to get into game making, instead of having cookie cutter FPS games RPG games etc there will be more studios coming out with unique games which will in turn force the gaming companies to not charge 60 dollars for a game. This has all been a long time coming and its a good thing that its happening, this bill would have basically given the power back to these dinosaur companies that shouldn't exist much longer.
