They may own the rights, but they aren't the creator of the art. Specifically, they have absolutely nothing to do with the creative process at all. All they are is marketing, basically. "But Conc," you say, "the world needs marketing." Yes, you're right, it does. However, you don't have to do it in such a sleazy way as to offend both the consumer and the producer. It's wake-up time, RIAA and MPAA. You're middle men in a business model that no longer requires your services. Welcome to the digital age--please shut your yapper and quietly step aside. We're coming the fuck through.

You're right, because the $300 bribe that Bush gave the American people totally worked out. Meanwhile, those that have "worked the hardest" (read, "born into money") are given million dollar tax cuts. Seems fair.

No, they just add their own legacies. Have you ever seen "Brazil"? That's where things like the Patriot Act are moving us towards. It's not necessarily just Bush (although it involves him heavily), but people like John Ashcroft (US Shitface #1 if you ask me) and others like to paint a picture for the American people that make them so scared that lawmakers can pretty much do whatever they want. "You say you want to chop off my left nut? You say that weed and left nuts cause terrorism? ... Well, okay. Just one nut though. Just don't take my guns."

Unfortunately, 8-balls never seemed to do it for me. A word to the wise, though. However dorky it may seem at the time, it's perfectly kosher to ask a girl out over e-mail. Be sure to be completely aware that you know it's geeky.

Women dig that sincerity and vulnerability bullshit.

Actually, for some groups they match the music written with a performer. Not everyone writes there own music. And these guys have made huge empires from CDs, tapes, records, and stuff. Why would they wanna lose their jobs. These guys probabaly know they are doomed eventually, but wouldnt you fight to stay in business another 10 years to make another 200 billion? (the 200 billion is a made up figure, i don't know how much record companines make in profit)

Fuck you, it's called optimism. I am jobless and wallowing in a the worst economic hiring period of 20 years. let me pretend things are getting better.

I looked up some stuff on the tax cut, and basically out of 7 major changes, 1 affects the wealthy (top tax bracket) directly. A shift down in the percent owed per tax bracket for the top 4, leaving the bottom 2 at 15 and 10%. The rest end up giving money to the lower brackets. In fact, some of the lower end taxpayers might end up paying no taxes and getting a check. Now true, the top bracket moving from 38 to 35% will give some millions back to the wealthy, but just because someone is well off why should they not be rewarded in tight times too?

Anyway, a lot of wealthy people are selfmade conc. Few are born into huge fortunes. Many doctors, lawyers, and engineers, etc, etc went to school under scholarship or loans and barely scraped by. This is what i meant by those who worked the hardest. Democrats hate success stories like this because the persons succeeds without using welfare or other social programs that they claim are neccesary for the disadvantaged to succeed. Take away the cane i say, and make them learn how to walk. Give them advice but not carry them.

Conc i am getting enganged this week, i already got a girl to fall for my vulnerable and sincere bit, pretty soon i can turn on full asshole

P.S. Conc smells like a lifelong bachelor.

They've had a chance to compete--they fucked it up. Remember when Napster first came out? Shit, even before Napster, file-swapping was a daily activity for some of us. But when Napster became popular, someone at the RIAA should have dreamed a little dream: "Hmmm, the Internet seems like it might be a viable route for marketing music, too!" All they had to do was do the same thing Apple's doing now--make high-quality encodes of popular music available at a reasonable price. They even had the financial well-being to do it up right. Five years ago, they could've had a service that would've put Napster to shame. Instead, they chose the true American way--litigation. Litigation against piracy doesn't work for two reasons. One, the majority of the people you'd be going after are minors, which is not only bad PR, but you're not causing a sea change. Secondly, the sheer number of "pirates" (I hate that term) dictates that you'll be playing "Whack-A-Mole" with services. Shut down Napster, Kazaa pops up. Shut down Kazaa, SoulSeek will be the next in line. It's an endless cycle that they can't win. We might as well call it "The War on Piracy", because it's going to reap as much progress as "The War on Drugs," "The War on Terrorism," on any other dumb PR stunt the DOJ thinks up. I see where you're coming from, that there's no reason that they should just give up, but most business models have had to adapt to the advent of wide-spread use of the Internet. The RIAA will have to follow suit if they want to keep their jobs--suing people isn't gonna cut it.

I'm just being realistic. I've got a job that I like, but it's still shitty for me to see my retirement plan losing money every quarter for the past two years. That, compounded with every "financial expert" showing up on CNN to say that "the economy's rebounding!", puts me in the position of calling shenanigans on their claim. Financial experts are the money world equivalent of meteorologists... they really have no fucking clue what's going to happen, they just make educated guesses.

I guess I just don't see why exactly they need to be rewarded. People in the bottom tax bracket need that money. In theory, those people are needing the money for the basic necessities (food, clothing, shelter, etc). The people on the other end aren't necessarily in need of that extra money. They need more money because they make more money than most people? How does that logic work? Chances are, they're exploiting the proletariat to some extent anyways. In my mind, all this is doing is widening the gap between the rich and poor.

See, I agree with you, for the most part, on this subject. But, on the other hand, it's a shitload harder for a kid in inner-city Detroit to become that doctor or lawyer if he has to work two jobs after school because his dad left when he was 6, and his mom is a crack addict. It's real easy for the middle-to-upper class white politicians to say "well, he just has to work harder to achieve, then," but seriously, how is this supposed to happen without some sort of assistance? If we're going to put on the facade of "the country where anyone can be anything", let's put a little bit of weight behind it.

I grew up in an upper-middle class family that had enough money not only to take care of my necessities (food, shelter, etc), but also get my brother and I started with computers at a very early age. That, directly, is responsible for where my life is at right now--making a very comfortable wage doing techy shit. However, it would be retarded for me to think that everybody has the same opportunities I've had.

I've been asked for my hand in marriage twice now. The girl was crazy as a loon. (PUBLIC WARNING: If you live in Lawrence, KS, there's a crazy cooz ticking time bomb walking around your town. Take cover as necessary.) Fact of the matter is that I'm far too shy. It took me two years to work up the courage to ask out the girl that I'm dating now, and that only happened because I knew she was going to be going out of town for a couple months. I have this whole "zero consequence" issue that I need to work on.

me and conc are only trying to wisen some of the 12 year olds into formidable debating giants. I am obvisouly republican in a majority of my beliefs, while he is liberal or independent. I think this makes for some interesting points of view. If anything else maybe someone will learn how to discuss without using a curse word or newbie.
                And now the dissecting:

                stuff about file sharing
I agree that they cannot win or stop the trading, and that they are only hurting themselves. I am only saying that you can't blame them for trying to stop it. And yes there has to be a better way than litigation. I don't think that the apple thing will make it. I am curious to see how long it lasts.

I guess I just don't see why exactly they need to be rewarded.
The rich persons are some of the largest contributors to politicians trying to get elected. You don't think they know how to scratch someones elses back? Do they need the cut? No. But will they remember which senator and representative that fought to lower their taxes? Yep. Money is how politics work, and how it will work for ever until there is better control on all donations and contributiouns. soft money needs to be better controlled.

In my mind, all this is doing is widening the gap between the rich and poor.
We aren't a socialist system, there will always be a gap. I don't understand how the "gap" is deteremined anyway. I believe we should follow the median low income statistics and monitor the increase in that to the increase in inflation. That will give a better account of how the poor are doing.

If we're going to put on the facade of "the country where anyone can be anything", let's put a little bit of weight behind it.
A lot of this can be done with a change in the culture of a lot of kids to think that college is for losers and that going pro or being a rapper or rock star is the best way to succeed. A crude wake up comes when they realize they won't be any of those and have no chance on scholarship. Some just need to be informed of available money and help, and they could make it. Others are too lazy to care enough to do anything and thus rely on the government for help because they don't want to work for anyhting. I think this is a lot of help out there, but the information is just not gettting to the right people.

Hannity and Colmes are billing it as a Pay-Per-View event. It's going to be like Royal Rumble, only with the noticable exclusion of Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Suprise guests will surely be there. and guess who your surprise guest hangman is....Rodwy Rodder Piper! With Bill O'Reilly to read you your last rights.
